Google wants to refine its music streaming services. At the moment, you can get it from a variety of sources, but things might soon get easier. As you probably know, YouTube also has a music-exclusive service, YouTube Red. As YouTube is now part of Google, the company thought of combining this service with its own music streaming platform, Google Play Music.
Music streaming offerings from Google and YouTube
If you think about music streaming services offered by Google, the one that comes up into your mind first is probably Google Play Music. However, this platform is way younger and has less to offer than the titan YouTube.
This platform has much to offer, and its primary purpose is to stream videos, whether they contain music or not. Also, it is more centered on music than Google Play Music, and offers many alternatives. First of all, there is YouTube Music but, if we’re thinking about paid subscriptions, YouTube Red has everything you need.
Why have two subscriptions for music services?
However, Google thought it’s not necessary for users to have two subscriptions for music-related services. Also, if you choose to subscribe to YouTube Red, you receive Google Play Music for free. Therefore, why should you have two services which do more or less the same thing? After merging the teams behind them, Google decided to merge them as well.
This sounds simple, but it’s actually more difficult than you might think. First of all, both services come with two brands in their name, and it’s hard to decide which one to drop. Both have a big visibility and popularity, and it’s not likely that the company would want to drop any of them.
Therefore, it might take some time until the two services will merge completely. When asked about how this will go on, Google declared that everything will be made public at the time of the merging. Until then, users have plenty of alternatives for music streaming.
