Long gone are the days when the concept of “making music” meant solely a band performing on stage or in the studio with the help of traditional music instruments, voices and a bit of technology to clean the sound and give it the needed nuances. Traditionalists would still argue that using software, computers, knobs, buttons, keyboards and faders doesn’t stand for artistic talent, but merely deep knowledge into technology, and yet, electronic music and computer – based sounds are so custom nowadays, few are actually wondering how those sounds are being created. We are used to dancing in a crowded place, powered up by a person who stays behind all sorts of devices and machines which, put together, usually look like the control room on the S.S. Enterprise.

But musicians using the available technology for creating new beats, sounds and tunes got tired of just being stuck to their operating decks and not actually interacting with their public or not truly expressing themselves and the music they are creating. You may or not be familiar with the name of Imogen Heap, a singer – songwriter that has been making electronic music for more than 10 years, but now you are going to remember her name, as she started a revolution in the field of electronic music, by initiating a Kickstarter campaign for the creation of MiMu Gloves that turn gestures into music.

These hi – tech gloves are fine – tuned to control music through programmable gestures, basically acting like mini – computers. Say that the musician wants to introduce a new sound effect, lower the volume, do some fading, accelerate the beat, add a reverberation and so on. All he or she needs to do is move his / her gloved hands in certain ways and there you have them, magicians on stage playing with sounds like they would play with magic wands.

The MiMu Gloves Kickstarter project, while not being the first one using this technology (gestural data interface has been among us for decades and powered up a lot of applications),  is quite original and aims to change the face of music forever. The team coming up with these incredible gloves expect the project to become a success in the immediate future and turn the gloves and the software into open source upon the Kickstarter completion.
