A recent Pew research reveals that more Americans are using Facebook and Twitter as news sources.
Social media is becoming more and more intertwined in out day to day lives and the main platforms have become sources of entertainment, advertisement and even news.
According to a survey conducted by the Pew Research center, 63% of Americans turn to Facebook and Twitter for the daily news. This is quite a sizable increase since 2013 when only half of the American public used the social media platforms as news sources.
And it makes perfect sense that the amount of people who get their news via social media would increase, because both Facebook and Twitter have gone out of their way to implement changes that would attract people specifically to news-related topics.
There are some differences between the two platforms however. Twitter seems to be the preferred platform for bring on breaking news, while Facebook is the clear leader when it comes to long comment feeds and sharing information.
There is one main aspect that should be considered though. The Pew research revealed that only a small proportion, 8% of Twitter users and 4% of Facebook users, regard the social media platforms as the most important sources for their daily news.
This means that most people still see some pieces of news in the social media feed and then change venue to more news oriented platforms to read the full size version. Furthermore, the majority of major publications have official Facebook an Twitter pages and they popularize their articles on social media.
Thus people see one article on Facebook and then by clicking it, they go to the source of the news and maybe even read more stories from that specific websites. Social media has always been extremely skilled at providing people with the right ideas for the information they need.
All in all, social media is quite a valuable part of our daily means of communication, and its progression can be clearly observed in the Pew research plans of the last few years. Nowadays, everything passes through the social media filter and it makes sense that the news be included as well.
