However, they weren’t enough. Although the name of Brendan Eich is a powerful one in the IT world, as he is the man who who built the foundations of the programming language JavaScript and co-founded Mozilla in 1998, his personal and private beliefs and values managed to transgress into his professional path to the point of changing its course. No sooner than he was appointed as Mozilla CEO, a wave of protest hit him hard, from the part of his own staff and from the part of no less than three Mozilla’s directors who resigned, although nobody admitted that their resignation was related to Eich in any way. However, all these factors, together with OKCupid’s public boycott instigation and the general public’s discontent with Eich’s attitude, convinced him to resign.
In a blog post, the non – profit organization announced that the Mozilla CEO resigned “for Mozilla and for the community” and that a successor to Eich will be appointed and announced in the following days. While on April 1st Eich tried to convince everybody that his private take on the matter of gay marriage was irrelevant to his abilities of running the organization and he wasn’t going to resign over this issue, it seems that the public’s voice echoed powerfully enough to pressure Eich and Mozilla to make a stand. Now that the Mozilla CEO resigned, it seems that the storm is slowly going away.
