Google knows how important it is to have a backup, as you never know what happens to your computer, and risk losing all your important files. Therefore, it has just decided to offer its cloud storage capabilities for free, and allow people to create backups for their system files.
Make direct copies of your files without creating new folders
This new feature is called Backup and Sync. What it does is offer you Google Drive’s storage and allow you to save files which already exist on your computer’s hard drive. The same thing applies to documents and files already existent on memory cards or external hard drives. Also, you can save them in the same format.
This means that you can simply choose to sync a folder with these services and a backup is automatically created. Therefore, instead of creating new folders where you should keep everything you need to be stored in cloud, this option makes a copy of your documents in Drive. This is a huge thing for those who need to create backups of bulky folders.
A free version comes with limited storage
Backup and Sync was announced for the first time last month with a lot of praise. The official announcement came on June 28th but, then, the rolling out got delayed for unknown reasons. Now, Backup and Sync will come as an app, and will take the place of Drive and the Photos uploader on the desktop, on both Mac and Windows.
One drawback of this Backup and Sync is the somehow limited free cloud storage space of 15 GB. Therefore, if you have plenty of files, this might not be so helpful. If you want more, you can fix it easily by choosing to pay for the service. However, it is still great for photos or documents which might need saving and don’t occupy a lot of space.
