YouTube is a platform that has succeeded in having millions of visitors every day. Even if it is about documentaries, music videos, movie trailers, vlogging or live streaming shows, YouTube is the place to be whenever you want to actually see what is happening around the world in any domain that you are interested in. The data base is rich and voluptuous, but there seemed to be a problem with the one designed for children. The lack of videos that are appropriate for childhood has made YouTube take serious measures and finally, they have a result. Google has decided to launch an app of YouTube that is actually a version especially created for children that have convenient content and controls. The best news is that the app is free and it will be available very soon in the U.S.: the new YouTube Kids will be available from Monday on Google Play.
All companies that work with and on the Internet believe that children are a great opportunity for them, because they usually surf the browsers by lying about their age and creating accounts full of unrealistic personal data on social networks. These companies thought that instead of arguing with the kids, they should be able to find their own place on the internet, suitably created for their own needs and fields of interest.
Pavni Diwanji, vice president for engineering at Google, told USA Today in December that:
“The big motivator inside the company is everyone is having kids, so there’s a push to change our products to be fun and safe for children. Google products have been made with adults in mind and need to be redesigned for kids.”
However, there will be a lot of work with Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) in the U.S., because of the harsh rules that they have regarding the safety of personal information in the case of children and minors generally.
On the other hand, it’s a very good idea to redirect the children towards this application, because anything that is set and programmed to be inappropriate, redirects the user to something different. For example, if the child types in a word such as “sex”, there will be a message on the screen telling him to search something else. In addition, the categories of channels and playlists are very well organized and there will be four of them: Shows, Music, Learning and Explore.
