Sony is preparing to move to a much faster charging speed next year, with the company pointing at wireless charging in under an hour. To any rational person who knows about electrics, it may seem impossible, considering the heat at 10-15 watts of energy going through a device.
With the help of chip and power company Rohm, Sony believes it could be done at the third quarter in 2014. No longer would a phone need hours to charge, even with a wireless charger the phone would be 100% charged in just an hour.
Wireless charging is not that huge yet, with only a few smartphones embracing the Qi standard on Android and Apple still not accepting it. Perhaps with this move to faster and more reliable wireless charging, more companies will embrace the new technology and start supporting it.
Charging a smartphone is not the major problem when it comes to battery, it is the amount of time before it needs to go back on the charge. Various larger batteries are starting to make battery life almost two days, but these are only available in smartphones with huge screens.
For the average consumer, the battery life is around 10 hours on most of their electronic devices, whether it is a mobile, tablet or laptop. The new wireless charging in under an hour may benefit people who have a charging lying around all the time, but for people out and about all day, it isn’t going to help.
Sony says they will have the charging kits ready for Xperia devices in 2014 and we have already heard rumors of the Xperia Z2 coming to CES or MWC next year. They did say the second half of 2014 however so this may not get the fast wireless charging upgrade.
Either way, this is a great move for charging on a whole, a pretty bland area not many companies explore.
