Specialists are wondering whether the profits of Nintendo Switch will surpass those of the Wii console. Nintendo released its fiscal earnings for 2016 on Thursday, April 26, which most likely included the global hard sales numbers for Nintendo Switch. At this point, analysts hope for the best. The NPD Group, which is responsible for tracking the video game system sales, argued that Nintendo sold about 906,000 copies this March in the US. The fastest selling game for Nintendo console was ‘The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’ which sold approximately 1.3 million units.
The Wii console sold 14,000 million units the first year
Now, analysts wait for the global sales figures which might significantly improve the total number of sales. For instance, Nintendo Switch has surpassed the profits of the PlayStation 4 registered during the launch month in Japan. Moreover, the tech company is known to have recorded amazing gains in Europe too. Some analysts argue that a forceful launch represents a good first step except that this is barely a sign of long-term success.
For example, the Wii U started out by selling approximately 890,000 in the first six weeks after the launch. Nevertheless, this became the worst selling console of Nintendo. Despite these prospects, some analysts believe that the Nintendo Switch will face strong long-term sales. Billy Pidgeon, who is an independent videogame analyst, claimed that Nintendo is bound to stay out of the competition by not developing a high-end gaming console.
Tatsumi Kimishima, the President of Nintendo, argued that Switch might surpass the sales of the Wii
Pidgeon also stated that Switch console is meant to connect the portable console to the home. Currently, many investors are wondering whether Nintendo Switch will outpace the sales for the Wii on a long term. Tatsumi Kimishima, the President of Nintendo, noted that this is not impossible. However, Michael Pachter, the managing director of equity research of Wedbush Securities, remains skeptical. He argued that he expects Switch’s sales to mirror the ones of the Nintendo 3DS.
Pachter pointed out that the Wii console sold about 14 million units the first year and that he doesn’t think that Nintendo Switch will outdo Wii’s record this year. However, one of the most significant keys to long-run success could be held by the new console’s software. Recently, Nintendo Switch presented a release schedule of upcoming big games like ‘Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’ on April 28, ‘Splatoon 2’ on July 21 and ‘Arms’ on June 16. All these games may boost the sales for Nintendo Switch even more.
Do you think that upcoming games will determine hardcore gamers to purchase the new console from Nintendo?
