Although Opera is far from being a leader in the web browser arena, it has still managed to hit the 300 million users per month milestone and is happily bragging about it. Not only is its web browser software now being used by 300 million user every month, the browser products across all supported platforms like phones, tablets, televisions and computers are also included in this milestone.
The Opera software CEO, Lars Boilesen said that although the company has reached this milestone the race is still on. This is the fastest increase in the number of users seen by this software company. Their next aim is to play for a bigger share in the market of smartphones all over the world.
This is an arena where they are currently lagging behind. This move will include adopting the same Webkit engine currently powering Google’s chrome and Apple’s safari. The company plans to make this change in the form of a gradual transition in its forthcoming versions of computer browsers and smartphones. This transition will ensure that its share in the market of web browsers will go up considerably. Not only this, its smartphone market share will also experience a significant boost.
Although the WebKit engine already has a great performance Opera software plans on participating in the improvement of this engine. This fact was stated by the Opera Software CTO, Hakon Wium Lie. He further said that the WeKit engine suited Opera perfectly because it adhered to the standards desired by them and also provided the performance that they required.
Along with WebKit, Opera Software will also implement Chromium. The results of this implementation will be placed for the world to see at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Here the company will show case its forthcoming browser update for Android.
