The Oscar Selfie Phone – Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Everybody’s talking about the Oscar selfie phone, the phone Bradley Cooper used to take the now infamous Oscar selfie picture, that included Angelina Jolie, Lupita Nyong’o, Brad Pitt, Ellen DeGeneres, Kevin Spacey, Meryl Streep, Channing Tatum, Jennifer Lawrence and Julia Roberts (and a bit of Jared Leto) at this year’s 2014 Oscars. The picture was the most retweeted photo in Twitter’s history (having reached 3 million tweets), it almost broke the social media website and it was not taken with a Samsung Galaxy S5, as many believes, but with a Samsung Galaxy Note 3!

Oscar Selfie Phone Specifications

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is a large and powerful phone. It’s not for people who like to fiddle around on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram; it’s for people who mean business. Its huge 5.7’’ screen size (with a resolution of 1080×1920 pixels) makes it quite hard to keep in your hand, no matter what Samsung says about this, but it gives you the freedom to work with applications that wouldn’t be quite handy on a regular 4’’ or 5’’ screen.

The hardware is quite impressive: it has got a 1.9 GHz octa-core processor, with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage (expandable up to 64GB through a microSD card). It’s running Android 4.3 but you can upgrade it to Android 4.4 Kit Kat, soon, sources say.

The Oscar selfie phone, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 has plenty of sensors, such as a magnometer, accelometer, ambient light sensor, a barometer and a temperature sensor, which means that you can basically tell the temperature and humidity in a room. With the risk of sounding like an old fart, what will they think of next?!

Did you know that the Oscar selfie phone wasn’t Ellen’s own phone (she owns an iPhone)? It was a product placement for Samsung; yes, the company had an ad deal with ABC to feature the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 in the ceremony. Samsung was so pleased that the photo reached so many retweets, that they donated $3 million to charities of Ellen’s choice? That was really big of Samsung! Even if the whole thing was crass product placement, we have to say: well done, Samsung!
