Mass Effect: Andromeda developers will introduce a new patch with updates
The studio apologized for the representation of Hainly Abrams, and it is bound to adjust anything necessary. Last month, Eurogamer explained that Abrams’ answer to a question regarding her joining the Andromeda expedition is strangely confessional. The character explains that back in the days she was just a lab worker who was known as Stephan, and she knew that was not who she wanted to be.
This way of presenting the character appears more like an obligatory thing to say to check the feature “trans” from a list. This is not the kind of dialog a standard character would have, especially when this character is compared at some point with a character from another game, Cremisius Aclassi from Dragon Age: Inquisition. The adverse reactions received from gamers determined BioWare to tweet more about the upcoming changes to assure players that they are doing their best to offer a pleasant gaming experience.
Game developers apologized for the representation of the trans character Hainly Abrams
BioWare stated that one of their non-player characters in Mass Effect: Andromeda, Hainly Abrams, was not represented in a very thoughtful way and the character needed more editing before being introduced. They felt the urge to apologize to anyone who already interacted with the character and who probably felt disturbed or hurt by that dialog. They did not intend for their players to feel uncomfortable when playing the game.
Game developers also argued that this character’s representation is the product of the game’s iterative process during the designing phase. They will change the structure of the character’s presentation and dialog. BioWare also indicated that they had some talks with the members of the transgender community and they are currently working on fixing the problem.
The moment they will implement the changes, the trans character will only share a particular amount of information to Ryder only if gamers choose to support Hainly.
