Samsung looking to add 4GB of RAM to future smartphones

Samsung has become a company fascinated with numbers and specs and the last year has been host to the octa-core processor and 3GB of RAM inside a smartphone, as well as opportunities to expand to 64bit technology and now 4GB of RAM inside their new chip.

This does seem a little strange, considering Samsung is one of the only smartphones companies actually adding 3GB onto their smartphones. Right now, HTC, ZTE, Sony, Huawei and others still are sticking with 2GB of RAM, which is all applications need at the moment.

The number isn’t all that matters, Samsung is ready to put DDR4 RAM into their next mobile chip, this is 50% faster and uses 40% less battery life than the 3GB of RAM on the Galaxy Note 3 and it makes apps and the OS on a whole run much quicker.

This all sounds good, but for the price of the new DDR4 4GB sticks it may not be worth the jump just yet, considering almost no application uses all three gigabytes of RAM on the Galaxy Note 3 and there is no real surge to grab the extra memory anytime soon.

We had this discussion last year when 2GB of RAM started becoming commonplace, saying most applications can run without a problem on 1GB of RAM. The big upgrade in RAM was mainly for multi-tasking and other background memory usage, while still running an active application.

Samsung will love to have 4GB of RAM out before anyone else and they probably have no real competition in this field, considering Apple is not bothered about internal specs on mobile devices and most Asian companies purchase their internals from Samsung in some shape or form.

What we’ve really got to consider is where is this memory going to be used – will it be wasted as the 3GB of RAM is right now or is there going to be some big change in the next year on Android, where high-end devices can take advantage of extra-RAM.
