Jaguar, one of the of the competitors in the race of building self-driving, autonomous vehicles, has just unveiled its latest concept in the area. Contrary to most, this targets the steering wheel, one that will be powered by artificial intelligence or AI, and which will be reportedly portable.
The luxury cars brand both revealed and offered details of its newest self-driving vehicle concept and also named the steering wheel, calling it Sayer.
Sayer, a Steering Wheel to be Moved Between Cars
In most autonomous vehicle concepts, both the steering wheel and the pedals are a thing of the past. Now, Jaguar took a different path and chose not only to keep this staple car part but also seemingly increase its utility.
In its latest presentation, the brand took the steering wheel and transformed it into an accessory for the car, one which can be carried and used in more than just one vehicle.
Sayer, as it is called, would also be departing from the present-day role of the wheel. Instead of being used to steer the car, this would reportedly act as a sort of artificial intelligence-based central system.
“This steering wheel concept lives in your home and becomes your trusted companion. Sayer is the first voice-activated artificial intelligence (AI) steering wheel that will be able to carry out hundreds of tasks,” presents the Jaguar press release.
In the statement, the company also pointed out that Sayer could work as both a “concierge” and a “warning system”. Once given a task, it will automatically determine when the riders should depart. It will even notify if maybe they would like to drive themselves in certain parts of the trip.
Jaguar also points out that, thanks to its being portable, this steering wheel can be kept both at home and at work, or anywhere else in between. This will also announce when and what type of car will be arriving after having booked a meeting.
The company’s concept works around and quite leaves behind the concept of car ownership, so it remains to be seen if it would actually be efficient.
Jaguar announced that it is planning to feature Sayer in the Future-Type, its upcoming concept car.
