Singapore is a high-density country who needs a new plan to boost the public transit. The solution was already found: self-driving buses. State officials made an agreement and decided to test these self-driving buses. This is just one step for accomplishing the country’s vision to use autonomous technology. The limited labor and land are two of the factors that influenced Singapore’s decision to test these buses.
Many other countries are looking to test this type of technology as well and to implement self-driving buses. Singapore made this agreement in order to make more people use public transport so that the traffic won’t be jammed.
Singapore made a collaboration with Nanyang Technological University ( NTU) on the bus trial and they are starting to test 2 hybrid buses.
In the future, the Land Transport Authority believes that transport is going to change and that there will be no “normal buses”, only self-driving ones and they will create an entire system. This system will be able to navigate Singapore’s climate conditions and traffic.
The announcement of these self-driving buses did not mention when the test will start.
States officials are also looking into self-driving vehicles that can clean the street and make other jobs for the community. If they are going to use cars for every service they need to create an entire system so that everybody knows what to do.
The problem with these self-driving cars is that once they are put to work they replace the people who were doing the job. For instance, bus drivers and street cleaners are going to be fired if self-driving vehicles will take over the industry.
Another problem is that they are still under test because they are not as safe as everybody thinks. As any other system and vehicle, they can have errors and they can just break down. For example, a self-driving vehicle hit another truck. The one that was guilty of the accident was the self-driving car because it hit the truck while it was changing lanes. People are still investigating the accident in order to see if the fault belonged to both parts or not.
If they discover that the one responsible for this accident is the self-driving car, people are going to be skeptical about this type of technology.
