Who would have thought the first country in the world that will have a self-driving taxi service will be Singapore? Although Uber officials said that in a few days they will have a test for a new technology, with self-driving cars, it seems that another company has been first. The test was small, but it was very important because it proves us that any company, no matter where it is, can make a huge discovery for the future.
The self-driving taxi is called nuTonomy. It was found by two researchers from the Massachusetts Insitute of Technology. They tested the car in a space where are many tech companies. Of course, there were other companies who managed to make self-driving cars, but this is the first people have access to them. The Singapore government approved this trial, which was possible due to many partners who were interested in nuTonomy.
What they are thinking about Uber? Doug Parker, one of the researchers of nuTonomy, said that they need to show that their technology is working and getting to a level where the market will be able to use it. Uber is just a challenge for them. They want to develop better self-driving cars and they might succeed. There were many companies which started as start-ups and now they are one of the most popular brands in the world.
The taxi will have a human driver in case something goes wrong and it can be called by using an application. The officials from Singapore had some rules for nuTonomy before it could be tested in other areas of the city. We do not know what these rules are, but the researchers said they will do more tests in other neighborhoods in the near future.
They think that Singapore will be the first country that will have self-driving cars for everyone who wants to use them. The taxi will be on the market in 2018 and we can’t wait to see how it is to have a ride without a driver. On the other side, Uber will begin its trials this month and they are going to have more self-driving cars during next months. In the future, we might see these cars in more countries. The only problem is the law. In some places, a car has to be driven by a human. We think that it these self-driving car will be used in Singapore and America, the law will be changed for other countries.
