The new Steam Machine is not performing as well as expected. For how much this gadget promised, it surely does not live up to its expectations. The experience seems to be a rather poor one compared to the old Windows one and it looks like putting your money into this sort of deal is equal to throwing it off the window. Why? Because of optimization: every developer’s worst nightmare, but a nightmare that should be done right.
The Steam Machine wants to make you the king of your living room. It was a good idea in the beginning, since the typical gamer stays locked in his bedroom and never comes out unless the internet is suddenly cut. So playing your living room would make gaming a lot more interactive, both with family and friends.
It turns out that staying locked in your bedroom is the best way to game though, because if you decided to make the transition from windows to this snail, you will definitely notice that you’re missing frames. And you’re missing a lot of them. What is sad is that you will feel this loss on the same hardware, which definitely indicates that the Steam Machine is to blame.
The guys at Ars Technica wanted to verify if things were as bad as they were suspected to be. And if they started off with the impression that the Steam Machine was a total failure, well, the gadget did not disappoint. Synthetic tests have demonstrated that the Steam Machine and Windows are not exactly different from each other in terms of performance, but let’s say that if you want to start being competitive in your games, you will need more frames than that.
As we previously mentioned, it’s all about the optimization. In terms of optimization, Linux is not as well taken care of as Windows, so differences are bound to appear. There was a lot of hype around the Steam Machine when it came out, but it looks like this is not what we were looking forward to.
This is a big sign for Steam machine developers to look into their device if they want it to live longer. Gamers are very well known for their desire to have great quality and as many frames as possible and the new Steam Machine is not performing as well as expected.
