Gamers have gathered again for a full week of speedrunning and gaming marathon, during the Summer Games Done Quick summer event which managed to gather an impressive $1.76 million worth of donations. Each year, gamers gather to spend an entire week of non-stop playing to raise money for charity. After six years, Summer Games Done Quick became incredibly popular and raised significant amount of money.
Summer Games Done Quick grew every year
This is the seventh year of the Summer Games Done Quick marathon, which initially started with quite a modest donation – $21,397. Then, with each year, the event started growing in both popularity and the amount of money it gathered, until it reached its current size.
On Sunday morning, Summer Games Done Quick ended with an Earthbound speedrun. The entire event managed to raise $1,760,400, both from direct donations, as well as from selling t-shirts. Also, Humble Bundle donated all the money which came from new subscriptions.
This year’s event managed to overpass the previous one, which managed to raise only $1,29 million. As we can see, it scored an immense progress for only one year, even if this year the marathons have been prolonged and more people got the chance to donate.
It still didn’t surpass its winter sister, Awesome Games Done Quick
The summer event reached, indeed, a new level. However, there’s also a winter donation event, Awesome Games Done Quick, which has always raised more money that it’s summer sister. For instance, this year’s donations were over $2.22 million. However, this is not a competition, since there’s much to win for everybody.
This summer, donations will go to Doctors Without Borders, or Médecins Sans Frontières, an NGO which offers medical help to people in need all over the world. Around 90 percent of the charity budget is made up of private donations, but any kind of help is welcome.
