iPad Air 2’s Smaller Battery Still Packs in the Power

Apple may have surprised us with several innovations this year, the latest of which being their iPad Air2. The tech giant says that its new tablet still gets the same 10-hour usage time as last year’s iPad Air, despite the 15 percent smaller battery incorporated in the device.

Granted, we could have seen that one coming since the iPad Air 2 is 18 percent thinner than its predecessor, too. What isn’t yet clear is how Apple ensures the same battery life when providing less juice to do it with.

According to Apple statements, a new innovation, the A8X chip, combined with software improvements allow the iPad to make up for the difference in battery size.

“Usually, increased performance comes at the expense of battery life. Notice we said ‘usually,'”

the tech giant said in one of its marketing materials.

Apple’s iPad is considered the No.1 tablet in all battery life tests, and for the most part, Apple has continued to make great leaps every year to ensure that no one else gets their hands on the coveted No.1. spot. Since being released, the iPad has been lauded not just for hardware design but also for it’s longevity.

Several reviews, including that of Scott Stein, confirmed Apple’s claims, saying that the battery holds up to marketing statements.

“The iPad Air 2 is a nice refinement and finesse of last year’s model, with a bevy of tweaks, enhancements, a much faster processor, and the welcome addition of Touch ID. Simply put: it’s still the gold standard for tablets.[…] battery life remains the same, although its battery life is already pretty good.”

he said in a recent review.

However, despite Apple’s claims, there are some who aren’t convinced. Walt Mossberg, for instance, from Recode, found that the original iPad Air did much better in the department:

“In fact, in one key metric, battery life, the Air 2 actually regressed from the original Air. In my tough battery test, it lasted 10 hours and 37 minutes, exceeding Apple’s 10-hour claim. That’s quite good, better than most other tablets. But in 2013, the original iPad Air turned in the best tablet battery life I’ve ever seen on my test: 12 hours and 13 minutes — about 90 minutes longer.”

The tech giant did not immediately respond to requests asking for comments or future information on whether the smaller battery incorporated in its new iPad Air2 could result in a drop in battery life when compared to its predecessor.

Apple Reveals New iPad Air 2, Mac Mini and OS X Yosemite

By Leave a Comment

Earlier this week we talked about Apple Pay and now we’re happy to announce that Apple has finally given us a date, October 20. Apple held its Media Event yesterday and they revealed three new awesome devices, including the new iPad Air 2. Today we’re going to take a look at two of them, plus a software update.

iPad Air 2

The iPad 2 was the star of the Apple Media event and for good reason. The new Apple tablet is only 6.1mm thick and weighs 0.96 pounds. Apple says it’s 18% thinner than the previous iPad Air, which is pretty impressive. The Retina display is also better than it is on the previous model, which an added antireflective coating; Apple says that it’s the least reflective display every put on a tablet. The 9.7 inch display has a resolution of 2048×1536, with 3.1 million pixels and 265 pixels per inch.

The iPad Air 2 comes with an A8X chip that is 40% faster than the one on the previous iPad Air model. The battery will last you for up to 10 hours and its graphics are 2.5 times faster than its predecessor’s graphics. Better wireless also comes with the new iPad Air 2, as well as the eagerly awaited Touch ID fingerprint sensor. Apple also added another color: gold, for those who like the bling.

Mac Mini

Mac Mini is Apple’s first try into what the industry calls thin clients. It’s a small and compact desktop computer, that’s smart and quite cheap. It starts from $499 and you can customize it to suit your own needs. The Mac Mini has a 7.7-inch square frame and comes with no display, keyboard or mouse. It comes with the new OS X Yosemite, so you’re getting the best Apple has to offer, in a small device. Choose from a dual-core Intel Core i5 or i7 processor, up to 3.0GHz speed, up to 16GB of RAM, 1TB of internal memory and as many ports as your heart desires.

OS X Yosemite

Apple’s latest OS X Yosemite operating system is going to be free to all Mac users starting today, October 17. All Macs since 2009 are supported and also some morels that were introduced in 2008 and 2007.

Be sure to check out our second article about the October 16 Apple Media Event! In it we’re going to check out the new iPad Mini 3, the iMac with 5k display and Apple Pay.

Are you looking forward to getting your hand on either of these devices? Drop us a line in the comment section below and tell us about it!

Apple’s second generation iPad Mini will come with retina display

By Leave a Comment

ipad-mini

There has been a constant back and forth when it comes to the iPad Mini retina display, some leakers say yes, others say no. We now have a rather valid source claiming Apple will add the higher-resolution retina display to the second generation iPad Mini, the news comes from The Wall Street Journal.

Apple has hung onto the retina display feature for quite a while now, it has been added onto the iPhone for the past three years and has since been available on the iPad 3 and above, the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and the fifth generation iPod Touch.

The original iPad Mini comes with the iPad 2 1024×768 resolution, rather shoddy in comparison to the Nexus 7 (2013) and Kindle Fire HDX, both coming with high-resolution 1080p screens at a cheaper price.

With the retina display, Apple could bump the iPad Mini above and beyond what Google and Amazon are shipping, with the iPad 4 resolution at 2048×1536. There is downscaling done on smaller screens, but perhaps Apple could go the extra mile and add a huge resolution to the smaller iPad.

Apple will not just add a nicer display, the iPad Mini is set for a full upgrade in terms of internal specs, most looking exactly the same as the iPhone 5 specs. We believe Apple will add the A6 processor and a slightly larger battery, alongside a new thinner and lighter build.

Price should stay the same, there is no reason why Apple would drop the price any lower and they may even push it up $20/30. It is not unlike Apple to bump up prices on their products, they may drop $100 off the iPad Mini price.

We are just one day from finding out all about the new iPad Mini, it would be a shame if Apple decides the retina display can wait until next year, especially with all the new competition.

Apple has sent out press invites for September 10 event

By Leave a Comment

apple-press-inviteApple has officially sent out press invites for its event on September 10. Cupertino is set to launch two new iPhones at the event, alongside the Golden Master or general release of iOS7. We do not believe Apple will reveal anything else at the event, there is talk of an iWatch teaser and a new line of iPods, but nothing solid.

The press invite has ‘Colors’ as the main topic, teasing at the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C color options. The iPhone 5S is set to come in black, silver, gold and granite; these are the only four we have found out so far, there may be a few more Apple is keeping hidden away.

As for the iPhone 5C, Apple will have five different colors available for this device, set to hit the developing countries markets and push Apple’s dominance in areas like China, India and Africa. The iPhone 5C will come in green, amber, pink, blue and white, according to recent reports, black will not be available.

iOS7 is the big software feature set to launch at the event in some form. Apple may launch the Golden Master at the event, giving developers a week or two to reconfigure apps to meet the guidelines or they may launch it to the public hours after the event, for some extra hype.

The only problem with launching the update at the event is it goes against Apple tradition, while it may push attention on iOS up quicker, it will also mean old iPhone users get the update before users going to buy the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C.

As for the iWatch, rumors say Apple will tease the new device as they did with the new Mac Pro, trying to gauge a response from the crowd. When Steve Jobs first showed the iPhone, everyone said it would flop, perhaps they will do the same with the iWatch and then a year later it will hit huge mainstream success.
