It was confirmed by Canonical CEO, Mark Shuttleworth, that Apple has bought a three-years supply of sapphire glass displays to use in the production of their upcoming devices. This means that the new iPhone 6 will have sapphire glass display. It was a slip that will probably cost the CEO quite a lot of money, but we’re more than happy to hear about it, as it is quite difficult to get bits of information from Apple before an official release.

The new iPhone 6 will most likely be unveiled in September 2014, and have an impossibly thin design, according to rumors, but production starts 4-5 months before that, so the timing seems about right when it comes to the announcement about the displays. Don’t expect Apple to confirm or infirm anything!

iPhone 6 Will Have Sapphire Glass Display and a 4.5 Inch Display

Sapphire glass display is made from synthetic sapphire; it is very transparent to wavelengths of light and it is also extremely scratch-resistant. Apple isn’t new to sapphire glass, as the current model of iPhone, the 5S, has a cover glass on the home button made from sapphire glass. A three-year supply of the material, as Mark Shuttleworth, means that Apple plans to do more than just cover a home button with the expensive material.

It’s also been speculated that Apple will increase the size of the screen from 4 inches to 4.5 inches, which many aren’t too convinced will happen. It took Apple five generations of smartphones to change its display from 3.5 inches to 5 inches.

To be honest, we doubt that Apple will take the same route as Samsung did, with its Galaxy Note or even their 5 inch Galaxy S4 and those who are believe that Apple will launch a phablet, will most likely be disappointed. We think Apple will simply improve their materials and hardware, the iPhone 6 will have sapphire glass display and they’ll be other cool little features, but we don’t think Apple is going to make radical changes to its iPhone 6.
