Facebook Turns Its Back on BlackBerry as Well

By Leave a Comment

social platforms are pulling the plug on BlackBerry support

It would appear that social platforms are pulling the plug on BlackBerry support slowly, but steadily, Facebook being the latest name to wave goodbye to the operating system. At this point, the often disregarded mobile OS BlackBerry 10 that came out more than 3 years ago is slowly being forgotten or abandoned by app developers of all varieties, the most popular ones now following suit.

This is a huge blow to the already struggling company, that is slowly falling even further out of shape trying to remain on the mobile market. With a market share as little as 0.5 percent, BlackBerry does not seem to be able to hold its already scarce fans happy and satisfied if the most popular of apps and services slowly pull out from offering support for this platform.

This announcement is happening after a long drawn and hesitant cooperation that was agreed upon 3 years ago between Facebook and BlackBerry. It would appear that the tech giant took upon the steps of WhatsApp and chose to rescind its support for the platform after they came to the conclusion that BlackBerry doesn’t offer the kind of app developing capabilities that they are looking for to broaden their spectrum in the future.

In other words, Facebook is not interested in the operating system BlackBerry has to offer; possibly due to the very small market share they hold or because of the wildly different platform they offer.

According to the spokesperson that commented on the situation afterwards on behalf of BlackBerry, the company is very disappointed with the situation, worrying over the loss of users that may take place when the system is rendered void of social media and texting apps. According to the spokesperson, BlackBerry “fought back to work with WhatsApp and Facebook” in order to get them to change their minds but by the looks of it, the decision on both ends appears to be final.

But in terms of how the users themselves will be affected, things may not be all bleak and dire. While the BlackBerry 10 Facebook and Facebook Messenger apps will no longer be receiving updates – and in that sense, never come to be up to date with the future releases – BlackBerry 10 OS does also support Android apps that users can download from the Amazon app store. So while the native BlackBerry app will cease to work optimally, at least phones running the newest version of the BlackBerry OS can still keep in touch with their friends on Facebook. Older version of the OS, however, will not be as fortunate.
