Call of Duty: Ghosts hits $1 billion in day one sales

By 4 Comments

call-of-duty-ghosts Rockstar Games exceeded all expectations when they launched Grand Theft Auto V and had already made $800 million in revenue from the game after three days, Activision has now trumped this number, announcing $1 billion in sales on the first day.

Call of Duty: Ghosts is the newest in the CoD franchise, one of the biggest gaming series in the world. Activision and Infinity Ward have talked in detail about new features added to the video game, but early reviews and first impressions hit the game for weak graphics and no ambition.

That has not stopped millions of fans grabbing the game on day one. Activision have pushed the game out to as many platforms as possible, although the dominate one will probably be Xbox 360, the hub for all Call of Duty games this past decade.

Other platforms Call of Duty: Ghosts will be on include the PS3, Wii U, PC and will be coming to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Activision has added some new multiplayer game modes but already people are stopping similarities and reworks of all games, pointing at Infinity Ward not trying their hardest for the next generation platform.

With the end of the seventh console era about to come to the a close, more and more games are hitting peak audiences. The Xbox 360 and PS3 each share around 80 million users and Microsoft reported around half of those 80 million are Xbox Live Gold Members.

This means game developers have a unique opportunity to reach an unparalleled size audience. The next generation consoles may take a few years to become the first party platform for many game titles, with the developers instead finding more success and revenue on the older generation.

Activision will be a big part of the next generation, their game in collaboration with Bungie is set to shake the console world. Destiny is a huge open world futuristic RPG and there are plenty of other open world games taking advantage of the new consoles power, including Tom Clancy: The Division, Elder Scrolls Online and Dead Rising 3.

Microsoft finally launched the Xbox 720 amidst much fanfare. Christened Xbox One, the next generation gaming console comes with an array of media abilities explaining which took up the majority of the launch proceedings. The event ended with the announcement of Call of Duty: Ghosts, the new version that will debut with the Xbox 720. That’s not all, for Microsoft also mentioned the game will be exclusive to the latest Xbox version, which means even users of the Xbox 360 might not have access to the Ghosts, at least not for the initial period. This comes with the usual norm for Call of Duty games where its Microsoft’s consoles that enjoy preference over any other gaming console available in the market. Needless to say, all of this is a ploy to get more attracted towards the latest Xbox One.

Coming back to the game, developers of the Call of Duty: Ghosts Infinity Ward has developed a new engine to make the best of the new Xbox One’s capabilities. As a result, the characters as well as the surroundings are more life-like and natural than ever before. Stephen Gaghan who has written “Traffic” and is also the writer/director of “Syriana” has written the story for Ghosts. The characters have been imbibed with more of emotional content. The Ghosts are in fact elite soldiers who fight to save their country after the mass event that starts the game. There is also a dog involved that does its bit by sniffing out the bombs.

Also, a nice aspect of the game is that the map never remains the same for long. There are natural events like earthquakes, floods or even man made explosions and such that keep altering the landscape. The game is best played in multiplayer mode though it’s not known how many players the new Xbox One will be able to support. Call of Duty: Ghosts releases 5th November, 2013. The Xbox One might launch before that or on the same day itself.
