Google Fiber offers speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second
According to an announcement issued on Tuesday, Google Fiber is expanding to Los Angeles and Chicago, among other 15 cities that were already on the list.
Before the age of Google Fiber, internet providers were fighting for access in cities, obeying different rules and assuring the councils that they will serve the poor neighborhoods and build internet infrastructure to schools.
Now, Google Fiber comes to ask cities what will they give to have this ultra-fast internet in their towns. Over a thousand cities hope they will benefit of this service.
Los Angeles is the next on the list of cities where Google Fiber will expand its network. To benefit from the service, the city has to adhere to a checklist developed by the giant, which includes predictable and efficient permitting, access to the city property and an assigned person especially for dealing with the company.
However, up to this moment nobody knows if Google Fiber plans to provide services to all the neighborhoods in L.A. A fair access would mean coverage even in the poorest neighborhoods, with people who would struggle to pay the monthly charge of $70 or the construction fee of $300 for the free but slower internet service.
Google Fiber’s spokesperson declared that the company’s goal is to provide services to as many people as possible and to cover as much as they can of L.A.
Until now, Google Fiber has only been available in Kansas City, Mo.; Austin, Texas and Provo, Utah. The next six cities that will benefit from the ultra-speed of Google Fiber are Salt Lake City, Atlanta, Raleigh-Durham, Charlotte, Nashville and San Antonio. After those it will go to San Diego, Irvine, Chicago and L.A.
Google Fiber offers speeds of 1gigabit per second, which is almost 40 times faster for upload and 100 times faster for download than the average internet in L.A. Those who will benefit the most from this huge speed are people in the industry of entertainment since they are the ones who need large bandwidth and fast speed to transfer huge amount of data.
Huge speeds of 1 gigabit per second are more than an average internet user needs at home but Google claims that this is the future. As the online market develops, internet providers have to keep track and be ready to offer what it’s needed and even a bit more.
