A while ago we posed the question of whether Twitter analytics tools were useful and today we have got more news about the social media giant. It appears that Twitter will give $10 million to fund a new MIT lab in which social media will be studied.
Twitter Will Give $10 Million for a Social Media Lab at MIT
Over the course of five years, Twitter will give $10 million to fund the creation of a new MIT lab whose purpose is to study social media and come up with new technologies that improve the way social media functions.
Aside from the giving the money, Twitter will also provide access to its stream of tweets and access its archive of tweets. MIT released a statement in which it said that it would be studying pattern discovery and also data visualization so that it can come up with new ways of improving public communication and organization. The statement said:
A main goal for the LSM will be to create new platforms for both individuals and institutions to identify, discuss and act on pressing societal problems.
Dick Costolo, Twitter Chief Executive, also released a statement in which he talked about Twitter’s commitment to give MIT $10 million.
With this investment, Twitter is seizing the opportunity to go deeper into research to understand the role Twitter and other platforms play in the way people communicate, the effect that rapid and fluid communication can have and apply those findings to complex societal issues.
