Lenovo Yoga 710 Review – Power, Performance, and Practicality

The world is changing at a very fast pace. So fast it seems everything is beginning to merge into one thing. I mean, look at cars, crossovers to be exact – a half sedan, half SUV. Now that is two for the price of one in its truest sense. And then we come to computers. And there’s no hiding behind fancy names here, they are what they are.

Lenovo Yoga 710 Review – What’s not to Love?

Yes. I’m talking about 2-in-1’s. And for those who don’t know what are 2-in-1 laptop is, it’s a laptop that can transform into a tablet. It’s fully a laptop yet fully a tablet and offers you the both of each – plus more. And like crossovers, they offer you the best of both worlds.

But are they really worth it? Are they good as the manufacturers and their acolytes claim? Well, let me be frank and say “yes, they are”. And here’s why.

Why Your Next Device Should Be a 2-in-1

If you think 2-in-1 laptops are the future of computing, you’re dead wrong. They are the present, and you need to catch up to the present if you haven’t already.

Lenovo Yoga 710

1. Flexibility

The biggest and most obvious feature of 2-in-1 laptops is their flexibility. Yes, they do bend over backward completely like the Lenovo Yoga 710, but their flexibility goes just beyond mechanical gymnastics.

2-in-1 laptops are flexible in the sense that they can be whatever you want to be whenever you want. If you want it to be a conventional laptop for faster typing, it becomes your efficient word processor. If you want it to be a tablet for fast streaming and convenient watching of movies, viola, it transforms into a tablet.

And when your device is as flexible as a 2-in-1, you too get the power to be flexible – you can use the device in any situation. For example, when sitting down on a commute to a meeting and you want to put a final touch to your pitch, a tablet is more convenient than a laptop, giving you easier maneuverability to work even in cramped spaces.

Is a 2-in-1 worth it? Hell yeah, it is.

2. More Economic

I can see your wide-eyed incredulous look. Yes, 2-in-1 laptops are more economic and I’ll prove it to you. Most people have 3 mobile devices they use to run their lives – a smartphone, a tablet, and a laptop. If you cross over to a 2-in-1, you cut down the number of devices to 2. And that for the price of one.

Getting a 2-in-1 laptop cuts out the cost (buying and running) of one device saving you money as well as the hassle of having to lug around so many devices when you are on the move.

Is a 2-in-1 worth it? You know it is.

3. Touch and Type in One Package

Let’s face it. As brilliant as a touch screen is, it is not always convenient. And that is why one of the most purchased accessories for tablets is a keypad. And the flipside is also true. A keyboard, especially a full-sized one is not always convenient either. That is why a device that can flip from one to another in an instant is truly a godsend. And with devices like the Lenovo Yoga 710 that have excellent keyboards and touchscreens, it couldn’t get any better.

Is a 2-in-1 worth it? Flippin’, yes it is.

And so my friend, with those 3 strong reasons in mind, let me introduce you to one of the most amazing 2-in-1 laptops you’ll ever encounter – the Lenovo Yoga 710. And yes, Yoga is a depiction of what it can do – bend over backward for you.

Lenovo Yoga 710 Review – Innovation at Its Best

When Lenovo launched the Yoga series, everyone thought they were being too ambitious. They were, and it paid off – quite well. The Lenovo Yoga 700 series was an immediate hit when it hit the market, for as many reasons as the number of degrees the Yoga can bend through. But I’m not here to give you 360 reasons why you should buy the Lenovo Yoga 710. I’m here to give you an honest Lenovo Yoga 710 review of one of the best 2-in-1 laptops on the market.

✓ Features & Design

When it comes to laptops and tablets, manufacturers always try to make their devices aesthetically appealing and usually at the cost of build quality. There is always a compromise of sorts. With the Lenovo Yoga 710, Lenovo did a great job of striking a balance.

The Lenovo 710 comes in a gorgeous aluminum chassis that not only boasts of beauty but durability. It certainly is able to take whatever you throw at it. The aluminum gives it a rather expensive look, one that would make you think it costs more than its $800 price tag. Inside the aluminum body, when you open it up, the Yoga 710 comes with a well-designed and placed island-style backlit keyboard and trackpad configuration that makes it easy for you to glide your fingers around. But the thing that will strike you the most is the 1080p touch screen with a bezel so small you may not notice it.

✓Premium Build Quality

And Lenovo did an excellent job of putting all these major components together as the build quality is just superb. All the pieces are joined together seamlessly and the entire unit just feels so rich and inviting. No wonder Yoga owners can’t keep their hands off it.

When it comes to dimensions, though, the Lenovo Yoga 710 could have shed off some weight. Weighing a not-so-tablet weight of 4.19 pounds, it becomes a bit laborious to hold it as a tablet. But thankfully, you can opt to set it down in stand or tent mode so as not to strain yourself. Despite having said that, the Yoga 710 is actually a lot thinner and lighter than some of its rivals, so perhaps we should be more forgiving when it comes to its bulk.

As for the hinge, you would expect it to be like, well, a hinge, but the Yoga feels as if it doesn’t have one. It’s as if it’s turning on air – that’s how smooth the transformation is. Truly speaking, with the Lenovo Yoga, you get premium build quality at the price of a basic machine.

✓Performance

With a combination of an Intel Core i5-7200U processor and 2GB Nvidia GeForce 940MX discrete graphics, the Yoga might as well have been named “The Ninja” as it can effortlessly and efficiently deal with any task you throw at it. Multitasking? A piece of cake, even if you throw in 1080p video streaming. The performance levels of the Yoga can actually be pitted against some of the more advanced models, thanks to its powerful 8GB RAM processors and 256 SSD storage.

For the YouTubers and fans of other streaming platforms, consider the Yoga for your next purchase as it will give you a lag free experience, and crystal clear images thanks to its 2GB of GPU and the powerful discrete Nvidia graphics card. So mighty is this 2-in-1 that you can actually use it, not just to watch videos, but to make your own as well. This is truly one powerful machine.

✓Battery Life

I must admit, battery life is a pet peeve of mine when it comes to laptops. I mean, what good is the performance if the battery doesn’t last long enough for the device to do the performing?

Because of its large chassis, the Yoga has extra space to pack battery cells, relatively a bigger pack. Couple that with Lenovo’s clever configuration of a full HD screen that uses way less power than a 4K display would, and the intelligently thought out video playback optimizations in the processor, the Yoga 710 can last you a good 9 hours.

Whether you watch or make videos, use the Yoga for business or school, or whatever other use you may have for it, be rest assured that the Lenovo will stick with you until you finish your project. As long as it is not more than 9 hours though.

✓Connectivity

In today’s world of multi-devices, connectivity becomes a very important factor when it comes to choosing a device. The Yoga’s connectivity options are more than adequate, if I may say so. With a headset jack, an SD card reader, a micro HDMI port, and two USB 3.0 ports, the Yoga have nearly got it pat down in this area. Except that it doesn’t have any USB-C ports. This can be a drawback as USB-C ports are starting to be considered the new standard for physical cable connections.

As for wireless connections, the Yoga 710 has 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 for wireless connections. In summary, we could say the Lenovo Yoga 710 is well connected.

Pros

  • very light and easy to move around
  • touchscreen and great picture quality
  • great battery life

Cons

  • location of the right shift key is different

From your simple day to day tasks to heavy lifting like video editing, this “crossover” won’t leave you stranded.
