Nokia Lumia 1020 on Sale at AT&T – Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint users have to Wait

July 31, 2013 By David Crozier Leave a Comment

The US based carrier AT&T has started selling the latest flagship device from Nokia, the Lumia 1020. However the Windows Phone 8 based smartphone is restricted to sale via the net only and if that is not enough, the device so far is exclusive to AT&T. The Finnish company has been following the practice of having a version of its flagship device for each of the carriers in the US. Whether such a strategy makes for a great business idea is a matter of debate though as things stands right now, Nokia has only one version of its Lumia 1020 on offer and one has to be either an AT&T subscriber to pick up the device or buy it unlocked at a higher price.

Those who are already subscribers to other carriers such as Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint will have to wait till Nokia comes out with their respective versions of the Lumia 1020. That Nokia is loosing out on quite a huge market unless it has a version of the 1020 for the other carriers is all too evident.

Also, while still on the price, the Lumia 1020 is definitely not cheap, even with the carrier subsidy in place. The device comes for $299.99 after signing up for a two year contract. For those who’d like to be hooked on to the carrier for only one year should be prepared to shell out a higher amount of $549. 99. Or if you prefer to remain free of any carrier obligations, well there is a price to be paid and that stands at a cool $659.99. Needless to mention, the flagship Lumia is definitely priced at a premium considering most of the best selling Android devices can be picked up for less than $100 in the US after carrier subsidy.

Meanwhile, AT&T also has a slightly more sugar coated pricing scheme for the Lumia 1020. As per the new plan termed AT&T Next, the price of the 1020 will come down to just 33 dollars to be paid for one year and eight months. Those opting for the AT&T Next plan though will have to be wary of the fact that they will have to pay the remaining sum if they choose to walk out of the plan at any time. But the good news about AT&T Next is that after a period of one year, customers can exchange the device for a newer model.

Meanwhile, the device is available in various attractive shades of white, black, and yellow and that too with no shipping charges. The device comes with a 4.5 inch display having a resolution of 1280 x 786 pixels. There is a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 3 on top to ensure better survivability. Powered by a 1.5GHz dual core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chip, the smartphone also boasts of an internal storage of 32 GB along with a RAM of 2 GB. However, saving the best for the last, the biggest attraction of the Lumia 1020 is its primary back facing camera that comes with a 41 mp sensor complete with a flash as well as the full suite of software to ensure one get to have the best quality images with the device.

Nokia Lumia 1020 41 MP Camera Phone Sold Out at AT&T

July 21, 2013 By David Crozier 2 Comments

The latest Nokia flagship device, the Lumia 1020 is sold out at AT&T. A notice to this effect has been sent out to AT&T users who have pre ordered the smartphone stating they will be in no position to meet the current order by the time it expects to ship the device. The Lumia 1020 is slated to ship not before July 26.

However, while this might not be to the liking of prospective buyers of the device, it’s sweet piece of news for its makers and retailers as well as the entire distribution channel. More so if the unavailability of the 1020 has more to do with demand far outstripping supply rather than due to supply constraints. Many an expert had also predicted a limited audience for the smartphone saying the incorporation of the camera features has made the device thicker and ungainly compared to the current iPhone and top of the line Android offerings. Being priced quite on the higher side at $299.99 even after agreeing to a two year carrier contract didn’t stop the 1020 from being sold out, which is no mean feat, it must be said. The camera oriented smartphone is priced $659 without any carrier obligations.

Now coming to the device itself, the Lumia 1020 is the first to arrive from the Nokia camp to feature the full complement of PureView tech. This includes a 41 MP camera along with image stabilization. The camera also comes with a custom application that allows user to make changes in the settings such as exposure times and such. The rest of the specs include a dual core processor rated at 1.5 GHz which is coupled to a 2 GB RAM and 32 GB of on-board storage. A 4.5 inch AMOLED display makes up the front of the device that runs Windows Phone 8. The 1020 is also the first device to come with the Amber and Windows Phone 8 GDR2 update which will enable the device to surface notifications even when the device is in sleep mode.

At present there have been no announcements from AT&T regarding further shipment of the device. The carrier meanwhile has sent a message to all those who have ordered the device stating that all orders that remains back ordered for about a month will be deemed cancelled. Nokia no doubt will have a lot of answering to do as to why it started with a limited number of devices, and that too when the device is made exclusive to the AT&T.

Nokia Lumia 1020 Unlocked Sim Free Now On Pre-order In The US, also at AT&T

July 17, 2013 By Lori David Leave a Comment

Negri Electronics, the US based retailer is now accepting pre order for an unlocked version of the latest Nokia Lumia 1020 in the US. The device is available at a price of about $736 which it must be said makes the device without the SIM quite pricey. There is a cheaper version of the same also available though it is exclusive to AT&T that has priced the Lumia 1020 at a quite reasonable $100. The price though includes agreeing to a two year contract from the carrier.

Meanwhile, the Nokia Lumia 1020 is the current flagship device of the Finnish company and it sure boasts of some of the most impressive specifications. Upfront, the device comes with a WXGA AMOLED display of 4.5 inch having a resolution of 1280 X 789 pixels. It is also supported with a Qualcomm Snapdragon dual core processor which is clocked at 1.5 GHz. The device also has a RAM of 2 GB along with an internal storage of 32 GB. The Lumia 1020 is based on the Windows Phone 8 platform.

However, the biggest USP of the device is its integrated camera which makes it a photographer’s delight. The Lumia 1020 consists of a 41 MegaPixel PureView camera along with OIS, a Nokia Pro Camera, which is as well supported by a Xenon Flash for the photos and a LED Flash for the videos. The device is also available in attractive shades of black, yellow and white, all of which are available for pre order. While it remains to be seen how the device, or particularly the camera actually functions in real life conditions, what can surely be said is that the Lumia 1020 is definitely a better looker than the Galaxy S4 Zoom which is a lot more bulky ad cumbersome.

To get more information regarding the latest Nokia smartphone, one can check Negri Electronics.
