Razer Nabu is a new smart band, blending fitness band and smartwatch features

January 7, 2014 By Micheal Baptiste Leave a Comment

razer-nabu Razer’s CEO Min-Liang Tan is excited about wearables, but his company is not in it to make a smartwatch or fitness band, instead they want to make a “smart band”, something that will be able to make mobile life easier.

The Razer Nabu has three core components, first is the dual-interface, one that shows a notification symbol and the other “private” screen to reveal all the information on the notification. For instance, if a call is coming in, the public interface will show the symbol and the private will show the caller ID.

Second is tracking, the Razer Nabu is able to track steps taken in a day and sleeping patterns. This is done through the various sensors in the smart band and will be available to look at through Razer’s utility application, which they will be providing on iOS and Android.

The third is gestures and this is where the Razer Nabu really tries to differentiate itself from other wearables. Razer has imported various gestures, allowing the user to dismiss calls, swap information with other Nabu users and has a “pulse” finder, where it will actively search for other Nabu users in an area.

Social features and gestures can be the future of wearables and the Razer Nabu is a keen step in the right direction, but we cannot see this becoming a widespread product and the social features may become a little redundant.

It is quite odd to see Razer step in on the wearables market, considering they are best known for laptops and gaming gear. The company has been trying to change the look of its products to the standard of Apple in terms of design and has been working hard on getting their edge in the PC market.

The question is will the smartwatch and “smart band” market become saturated, before the big players like Apple, Google and Microsoft even step in to show their own concepts.

LG LifeBand Touch reportedly will launch at CES 2014

December 31, 2013 By David Leave a Comment

lg-lifeband-touch LG has already announced they will be launching a smartwatch sometime in 2014 and it looks like the South Korean electronics giant will take no time, with news the LifeBand Touch will be revealed at CES 2014, in January.

This is a little earlier than what we were expecting, but it seems every manufacturer is prepping their biggest products for the early launch window, between January and April, with most of the consumer electronics coming to CES.

The newest tip comes from Evleaks, saying the LifeBand Touch will come with a Fitbit design and will not be a smartwatch per say, more like a smart-band. We still believe there will be an interface for checking the time and recent notifications, instead of just a plain band.

The leak says the LifeBand Touch specs will come with an OLED display, accelerometer, altitude meter, and music player to control the connected device. Samsung’s Galaxy Gear only worked with the Galaxy Note 3 and some other compatible Samsung devices, but LG’s smart-band will work with iOS or Android devices.

We do like the idea of LG getting into the fray with Nike and Fitbit, but this is stiff competition and a lot of people already love the Nike Fuelband, including Apple’s CEO Tim Cook who regularly compliments the ease and use of the fitness band, compared to others on the market.

LG may bring more than just the LifeBand Touch to CES, we have heard about the first LG G3 rumors, coming with a fingerprint sensor and 3GB of RAM, alongside some other high-end specs and a brand new design.

Other than the LifeBand Touch, we have heard about HTC possibly developing their own smartwatch and other smart devices and Samsung may be bringing their second generation of the Galaxy Gear to CES or MWC, alongside the Galaxy S5.
