Apple Remains Top Smartphone Producer in US

July 4, 2014 By Nicholas Anderton Leave a Comment

Apple’s fan base has remained loyal in May too, according to a report by Comscore. More than 169 million people owned a smartphone two months ago. Apple achieved more than just maintaining the top position. Comparing to February, the company’s market share increased by 0.6 percent to 41.9 percent and Apple remains top smartphone producer. We expect after the latest hire, Apple’s market share will soon rise even more. Samsung, the producer with the second largest smartphone market share, gained 0.8 percent, reaching 27.8 percent. LG was the following with 6.5 percent and Motorala was very close with 6.3 percent. HTC reached an honorary position in the ranking with 5.1 percent. LG’s market share fell just a bit, while Motorala’s remains constant.

It’s a staggering result for a very rapidly evolving context. Android devices have much more impressive specs than the latest Apple gadgets. Apple’s smooth and intuitive UI surely plays a crucial role in securing the company’s top position. But more importantly is how tightly users have stuck to Apple. It just shows what a powerful brand Apple still is, and it happens just a couple of months before the new iPhone is released. After the long awaited iPhone, and the even more expected iWatch will be introduced in September, we will probably notice a major boost for Apple’s market share, especially because 65 percent of AT&T clients will be able to upgrade, according to Fool.com.

Apple remains top smartphone producer, but Android dominates the OS market share ranking

For a predictable change, Android dominates the OS market share with 52.1 percent. Apple follows with the unsurprisingly identical figure, 41.9 percent. Microsoft’s share is a modest unmodified since February 3.4 percent. The almost dying Blackberry OS andSymbian OS do not count for more than 2.3 and 0.1 percent.

The report also contains numbers on the most used apps. The Facebook app was used in May by 76.4 percent of the smartphone owners, Google Play by 51.8 percent, Youtube – 51.7, and Google search – 49.2 percent. Pandora, the popular music streaming service, has a 47.6 percent market reach, according to morningledger.com.

The US are Apple’s most important market with 31 percent of the total revenue. Europe and China only contribute with 22 and 20 percent. But in China, Apple dominates the high-end smartphone market, with 80 percent out of the $500 plus devices. Apple remains top smartphone producer in Japan too and even grows its market share to 51.7 percent.
