Motorola’s Moto 360 Smartwatch is An Impressive Device

September 5, 2014 By Lori David Leave a Comment

At the end of August, LG revealed their new smartwatch, the LG G Watch, which is quite impressive. Yesterday, Motorola revealed their much anticipated smartwatch, the Moto 360 Smartwatch and it’s a remarkable device that is going to make quite a splash, we believe. Let’s take a closer look at the Moto 360 smartwatch and see what the fuss is all about.

Moto 360 Smartwatch

The Moto 360 smartwatch was announced in March, alongside Android Wear. The most impressive feature that has left people pining over the new device is the rounded design.

The Moto 360 smartwatch has a 1.5-inch screen that has a resolution of 320 by 290 pixels. The only obvious design compromise that Motorola chose to make, over making the device larger, is a black band at the bottom of the display, which is the display driver and the ambient light meter. It does look a bit weird and we hope it won’t bother the eye too much.

Moto 360 Smartwatch

The Moto 360 smartwatch is water resistant and measures 46 mm in diameter and is 11 mm thick. It’s not a sleek watch, although it does look pretty sleek. It has 4 GB of internal storage, an integrated hear monitor, a 320mAh batter that is supposed to last all day according to the company and it is powered by a Texas Instruments processor.

Moto 360 smartwatch starts shipping on Friday for $250. We’re happy about the price and the fact that it comes with Android Wear. It will come in a black leather armband or limited-edition gray leather with a suede finish. You can buy it from Google’s Play store and through Best Buy.

In short, the Moto 360 smartwatch looks great; modern, minimalistic and something that most people would be happy wearing around their wrists.

Are you impressed by the Moto 360 smartwatch? Is the price attractive? Share your thoughts with us in the comment section below.

LG G Watch R Official Teaser

August 25, 2014 By Mary Duncan Leave a Comment

Every gadget producer wants to be in the first lines of the battle and LG G Watch R is the Korean company’s attempt in this respect. The industry learned a lot from Apple’s iPhone success story from 2007. This is not the moment to be shy or take extended periods of time to do extensive research. Established tech-producers want to replicate the iPhone success as a new type of device and the introduction of a new type of gadget is the proper moment.

Although smartwatches are already on the market, for example Sony and Samsung already sell them for a couple of years, there is a new layer of hype around the next wave of smartwatches. Android Wear is now available for producers, so they will be able to add increased functionality to devices. The main battle is based on two equally important criteria.

First, designing a smartwatch is even more important than designing a smartphone. The latter type of gadgets already reached an established industry wide consensus – the rectangular shape. The advantages are clear and without any technological paradigm shift, there are few reasons to change it. On the other hand, smartwatches are a very visible type of gadgets, and take further the classical role of the watch as a fashion accessory.

However, a second criteria comes to play. Android Wear will provide enhanced experience for smartphone users. The two devices will pair and offer added value by talking the same language.

LG G Watch R takes on Moto 360

Motorola already announced an event taking place on September 4. At the media event, Motorola will launch the new Moto X+1, Moto G2, an earpiece and the Motorola Moto 360 smartwatch. The first images of Moto 360 are convincing, as the round shaped smartwatch conveys elegance. Moto 360’s specs have already been mistakenly released by Best Buy.

The first image of LG G Watch R

LG must have been convinced of the design as well, because the Korean producer will introduce a round shaped smartwatch in September as well. Until the IFA event in Berlin, we can have a look at the new LG G Watch R.

The teasing YouTube video launched by LG clearly takes a shot at the Moto 360. Motorola’s smartwatch, although completely round, does not use the whole space. A small part close to the edge is not usable due to technical characteristics. LG shows a watch with Moto 360 display shape, which turns into a complete circle.

Motorola Moto 360 Specs Mistakenly Released in Advance by Best Buy

August 18, 2014 By Micheal Baptiste Leave a Comment

The Motorola Moto 360 smartwatch is arguably the most stylish piece of technology to sport Android Wear. Google introduced the new OS for accessories in June at the annual conference. Two other gadgets were presented as well. However, none of them is available for sale, as Google, LG, Samsung and Motorola, all worked on perfecting the OS and hardware compatibility.

Google wants to impose a standard with the smartwatches, something that it did not manage to achieve in the smartphone world. Various OEMs wanted to impose their services by adapting Android and adding another layer of apps. The process lead to deep fragmentation in the Android world, a striking difference when compared to the iPhone experience.

Nevertheless, there are differences between the three expected smartwatches to be launched this fall. Now we have a first set of specs that will serve as a comparison standard for many subsequent products.

Motorola Moto 360 comes with impressive specs

Motorola sent online invitations last week to an event taking place on September 4. Motorola Moto 360, along with the next generation flagship smartphone, X+1, the critically acclaimed Moto G and a Bluetooth headset were hinted in the invitation.

Motorola Moto 360 specs are now avalable because of a mistake

Motorola seems to have spent a great deal of efforts in the preparation of this event, but on Monday the company received a misfortunate news. Best Buy, one of the future Motorola Moto 360 dealers, released the specs by mistake. The tech dealer took the info down soon, but Droid Life managed to store the information, including the sale price.

So the final Motorola Moto 360 specs are these. The smartwatch will have a 1.5 inches display. The backlit LED display will be a touch screen with a resolution of 320 X 290 pixels. That will mean a density of 205 ppi. The display will be protected against scratches by a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 layer. The devices will come with a heart monitor sensor, and a pedometer, among others. The OS will be supported by 512 Mb of RAM and a Texas Instruments processor.

The 2.1 oz devices will be waterproof, according to Droid Life. The lithium-ion battery is not going to be swappable. The whole system comes packed in a steel and plastic casing. A great addition is the vibration option, so from now on morning alarms will have a different taste.

So would you pay $249 for the new Motorola Moto 360 smartwatch?

Parkinson Health Sensor Tested by Michael J Fox Foundation and Intel

August 13, 2014 By Nicholas Anderton Leave a Comment

As the Internet of Things becomes more pervasive, its applications become more useful. The number of accessories connected to the internet grows by the day and some have increased social value compared to others.

Most accessories involve tracking human activities on the go. The aspect is highly relevant in medicine, as big data can be collected and thorough analyses can be the outcome. A Parkinson health sensor may even come up with enough data to establish the disease’s origin.

The largest tech companies already announced kits directed at measuring health indicators. Samsung announced Simband, a wristband collecting various data from the user’s body. Google presented Google Fit, its own software to collect health data. Moreover, Google already introduced recently the idea of a smart contact lens to measure the blood sugar levels. Apple announced HealthKit, an app to gather data from third-party sensors to be featured on the future iOS 8.

Michael J. Fox suffered from Parkinson. The actor has been diagnosed with the disease back in 2000. He then decided to put some personal effort into finding out more about the incurable disease. Around five million people worldwide suffer from Parkinson’s.

Fox runs the Michael J Fox Foundation, an organization aiming to increase the knowledge on Parkinson’s and help patients have better lives. The degenerative neurological disorder usually affects older people. The motor skills functions decrease over time, with symptoms such as uncontrollable movements, coordination problems and gradually reduced intellectual capacity.

Parkinson health sensor may provide info used to adapt medication to each patient

The foundation teamed with an Intel branch to set up an accessory which will record health indicators from the Parkinson patients. The link with Intel has been made through Andy Grove, one of Intel’s first CEOs, as he suffers from Parkinson too.

Parkinson Health Sensor will help doctors understand the disease

The wearable device will record the symptoms from Parkinson’s patients and will offer doctors a basis to compare the effects of different medication. The objective data will be highly important as Parkinson’s is not well understood. Scientists believe the disease is a result of genetic and environmental factors.

The Parkinson health sensor will come in the form of a watch. In preliminary tests, researchers gathered about one GB of data per patient per day. Intel assures that all the patients who will use the device will have their privacy protected through encryption, BBC reports. The accessory will go through intensive trials before a potential market release.

Apple recruited TAG Heuer Sales Executive for iWatch

July 4, 2014 By Lori David Leave a Comment

The smartwatch world gets more competitive. Even Microsoft decided to reengage with wearable products. To strengthen the team around the iWatch, Apple recruited TAG Heuer sales executive. The announcements and rumors in the last two years built up incredibly high expectations for Apple iWatch. Everyone expects each new product launched by Apple to be a premium device. But to live up to the challenge, this time Apple assembled a super team around the iWatch production. Apple hasn’t shone as much after Jobs passed away. iPhone 5S has not been more than a modest upgrade of the previous model and a slight improvement in comparison the 4th version. Not so many revolutions from Apple in the last while. What could the iWatch possibly feature that will make us love Apple once again? We do not doubt that the hardware and the software will run exactly as intuitively and as seamlessly as the previous Apple products. The newly launched Android Wear already impressed some people though its functionality, although the beta version can surely be improved. Motorola Moto 360, for example, impresses with its stylish classical design.

Apple recruited TAG Heuer sales executive for iWatch launch and assembles a star-team

The new member of the iWatch team is Patrick Pruniaux, the former VP of Sales and Retail of TAG Heuer. The Swiss company produces luxury watches and Pruniaux is a huge loss for them, as rumors say that TAG Heuer plans to produce smartwatches as well. The move makes perfect sense for Apple. Pruniaux will deliver exactly what the company needs right now, an even better understanding of luxury watches clientele. Moreover, TaG Heuer is a widely recognizable luxury watches company, in comparison to other peer companies and this has a lot to do with its aggressive marketing.

Apple recruited TAG Heuer sales executive to create star team around iWatch

The former TAG Heuer employee will join an iWatch star-team. Among other experts on medical sensors, engineers and fitness experts, many of them come from Nike. Tim Cook, Apple CEO, was very appreciative to Nike Fuel Band, the company fitness oriented wrist device. Angela Ahrendts, former Burberry Chief Executive became Apple’s Head of Retail and Online Sales about two months ago. Another star playing for Apple since last year is Paul Deneve from Yves Saint Laurent, according to The Financial Post. His position covers special projects. The iWatch will probably, and finally, be presented this fall together with the iPhone 6. Both devices will run iOS 8, an OS version designed with wearables in mind. During the interview for CNBC, TAG Heuer CEO, was the first to actually reveal a transfer to Apple. Apple recruited TAG Heuer sales executive, but it was not the only attack on the Swiss company. Rumors say that other TAG Heuer employees were unsuccessfully courted as well by Apple.

Microsoft Fitness Smartwatch: A Thing For the Future or From the Past?

June 3, 2014 By David Crozier Leave a Comment

microsoft smartwatchA recent report coming from Forbes Magazine told us that Microsoft planned to deliver a fitness smartwatch that synchs with iOS phones, Android phones and Windows phones, in an attempt to enter a market clearly dominated by Apple and Samsung. The Forbes experts consider this Microsoft fitness smartwatch business a

surprising development in the ongoing conversation about wearables,

emphasizing on the fact that

Microsoft is the latest technology giant preparing to jump into the wearables market, with plans to offer a sensor-rich smartwatch that measures heart rate.

We told you everything we knew about this upcoming device and its cross – platform feature, but we have to come back to this subject in order to clear things a bit. Those who are not tech aficionados and don’t remember quite well the rumors surrounding each tech giant and its past plans need to have their facts straight, out of respect for other peoples’ work.

The sources telling Forbes about the upcoming Microsoft fitness smartwatch are still undisclosed. However, we are witnessing a severe case of amnesia, as rumors about a future Microsoft smartwatch aren’t at all new. Back in 2013, countless rumors, leaks and reports all swarmed around the idea that Microsoft wanted to deliver a 1.5 inch display smartwatch, with a heart-rate monitor, 6 GB of internal storage and 4G/LTE Internet connectivity. Moreover, back then, it was said that this amazing piece of gadget was developed by specialists appertaining to Surface and Xbox teams. If you are interested in these rumors, find articles from April, June and July 2013.

microsoft-fitness-smartwatchTo add insult to injury, Forbes specialists also said that Microsoft was the last tech behemoth to get interested in the wearables market when, in truth, Microsoft was the first to think about wearable gadgets. Let’s listen to tech experts who know what they are talking about:

Microsoft was way ahead of the curve when it comes to wearables: In 2002 it launched the then-revolutionary SPOT (Smart Personal Objects Technology) Watch, which featured a number of notifications systems such as sports results, email, and weather forecasts, pushed via FM radio. The watch not only predated the smartphone, but it offered a host of the alerts and features that current handset owners take for granted but couldn’t have imagined at the time. Yet despite its innovation, it failed to catch on, even though Microsoft licensed the software and access to the platform so that traditional watchmakers could integrate the smart features into their own devices.

SPOT saw its life ending in 2008, but this doesn’t mean its legacy has ever been forgotten. Because of the SPOT the world got the Pebbles watch, so all in all, Microsoft doesn’t copy what its competitors created, but brings back something it created long before smartwatches were cool.

With these things in mind, kudos again to Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, who seems to fight the good fight in gaining back the company’s former glory.

New Microsoft Smartwatch Could be a Cross-Platform Device

May 29, 2014 By David Crozier Leave a Comment

New Microsoft SmartwatchMicrosoft announced earlier this month that it would release Xbox One without Kinect and consequently there would be a price drop of $100. Today we have news that Microsoft is preparing to launch a smartwatch that could play nice with many smartphones. Apparently, the new Microsoft smartwatch is going to be a cross-platform device.

New Microsoft Smartwatch

Being a cross-platform smartwatch means that the device will be compatible with gadgets running not only Windows Phone, but also Android and iOS. A very intelligent move on Microsoft’s part, we think.

Multiple sources have revealed that the new Microsoft smartwatch will have sensors that will measure the wearer’s heart rate at all times. Making the smartwatch to work with iPhones and Android smartphones makes the new Microsoft smartwatch a very popular choice already.

The heart rate sensor is where Microsoft will be putting all of its money. The new Microsoft smartwatch is apparently aimed at fitness enthusiast. More rumors are saying that the smartwatch’s battery will be similar with Samsung’s Gear Fit, meaning that it would last up to two days on a single charge.

Rumor has it that the thing that would set the new Microsoft smartwatch apart from other smartwatches would be that the fitness tracker will track the heart rates non-stop. You won’t need to switch it on by yourself, it will do that for you.

The new Microsoft smartwatch’s heart rate monitor will borrow the technology from Kinect, the motion sensing device Microsoft has in its Xbox 360 and Xbox One game consoles. Could this mean spoken commands and cool gestures? We sure hope so!

New Microsoft Smartwatch – a Cross-Platform Device

Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella unveiled in April some products that were compatible with Apple’s iPad. He also mentioned in a conference this week that he believes that Microsoft devices should work on all devices and that it was time for us to build the next thing.

Does this mean that Microsoft is getting ready for something new and big with the launch of the new Microsoft smartwatch? We believe they are. A cross-platform device benefits everyone: the manufacturing company, the users and the carriers. It’s a win-win situation!

What are your thoughts on the new Microsoft smartwatch? Are you looking forward to seeing what all the fuss is about? Do you think it is going to be a cross-platform device? Share your thoughts with us in the comment section below.

Behold for the Samsung Wrist Communicator, James Bond!

May 26, 2014 By Brandi McCants Leave a Comment

samsung smartwatchDon’t you love those old spy movies (and Batman series) where the superhero communicates and gets things done via a wrist watch that is so omnipotent, it can easily replace all smartphones, smartwatches and ultrabooks altogether?

Well, if you wanted to talk to people via your watch, pay attention to Samsung, as it aims to turn its smartwatches into true James Bond gadgets.

Indeed, we already have the smartwatch that can perform voice calls, but it works only if paired – up with a smartphone. Now Samsung plans to create a standalone smartwatch to work without the afferent smartphone.

How smart is this anyway?

According to anonymous sources quoted by the Wall Street Journal on Friday,

Samsung’s watch-phone will be able to make and receive calls without being tethered to a smartphone, something most smartwatches on the market now can’t do, according to people familiar with the company’s plans. It will also take photos, send email and come with GPS, Bluetooth and a heart monitor, the people said—a suite of features that would make the gadget-toting James Bond proud.

Actually, detective Dick Tracey would be even prouder of the upcoming Samsung wrist communicator, but if Dick Tracy were to live today among us, he would have a few issues to be concerned about. First and foremost, in order to work as a phone, the smart device should be provided with a carrier SIM card, which, in turn, would require different paid plans for consumers. Now the smartwatches aren’t so popular, no matter how much Samsung and other similar companies have invested in these gadgets. Since the voice call function with the help of a smartphone and a Bluetooth is not yet very satisfactory, imagine paying for a service working twice as bad.

On the other hand, Samsung has already four smartwatches on the market and it is pushing forward to test and perfect their Tizen operating system, as a challenger for Apple and Google. The new Samsung wrist communicator is said to be launched either on June or July this year. While it is clear that this device won’t return high profit levels for the company, it will complete the Samsung smart devices family and will certainly appeal to the “technogeeks”. All in all, since Samsung has big plans for Tizen (aimed to connect wearables with other Samsung hi – tech and household devices, such as TV sets, cameras, refrigerators and even air conditioners), it is also clear that the company wants a big slice of the wearable devices market share in the future.

Apple Biosensing iWatch: Facts, Rumors and News

May 6, 2014 By David Crozier Leave a Comment

apple biosensing iWatchWe are all used to Apple rumors and we are expecting and welcoming them every day, as the tech giant seems to wish to turn this year into a historical milestone in its development. Not so long ago we were talking about the upcoming iWatch, promised to make a revelatory appearance this fall, and its incredible features and ultimate goals. We also said back then that there was still enough time until September and that all rumors should be taken with the proverbial grain of salt. Well, now things are starting to make more and more sense, as a lot of rumors, statements and facts are stepping into the light in order to reveal a bigger and a clearer picture of where is the iWatch going to: it seems that it will be more than a time – telling device that looks cool, it is going to be a health / medical gadget meant to change our perspective on wearables and biotechnology. However, we all knew this, right?

But let’s take a step back and take a deeper look over the matters. In the last year, according to the specialists watching closely Apple’s activity, it seems that the tech mammoth hired a lot of senior medical technology executives, building a team of experts in the biomedical field, the hardware field and other medical – tech related areas. This mass scientists hiring is easily observable by checking LinkedIn changes of profiles and jobs, while people familiar with the hiring and Apple’s plans said, under complete anonymity, that the actual number of hires is still unknown.

Since the majority of hires focused on experts in the sensor technology and biomedicine, the facts can only lead to one conclusion: we will witness the creation of the Apple biosensing iWatch, a device with multiple applications in the monitoring and preserving users’ health and well – being. This conclusion is further strengthen by the statements of Ted Driscoll, a partner at Claremont Creek Ventures (a Silicon Valley expert who specialized in digital health and medical devices). According to Reuters, he declared that

Apple seemed primarily focused on recruiting engineers with experience in “monitoring the body’s perimeters.”

Now the medical – tech wearable devices aren’t a thing of the present, as many other tech giants tried to come up with smartwatches that can help people stay healthy and monitor some of their vital functions in order to prevent any unfortunate health problem to occur, but so far, on a very large scale, users didn’t get along too well with their wearable healthy – geeky devices. While Apple biosensing iWatch may change completely this state of facts, let’s not forget that Google’s approach is quite revolutionary too: their experts are working on contact lenses provided with microcameras that can monitor the glucose levels in tears, not to mention that the Google Glass can have tremendous benefits in the surgical field. With these rumors spinning around our heads, it is clear that it will be a hard game to play in the health wearable gadgets’ market. Until then, let’s wait for more rumors on Apple biosensing iWatch and try to make the best out of them!

Samsung Gear Fit Smartwatch: The Best Wearable Device

April 15, 2014 By Daniel Giordano Leave a Comment

samsung gear fitIt seems like every device is getting smarter. It all started with smarter phones and from then on every piece of gadgetry wants to compete with each other when it comes to features and design. The latest in smart devices is the smartwatch. Nowadays a watch is not only used for telling time and setting up an alarm. It’s also a device that watches our weight and displays emails.

Smasung Gear Fit smartwatch is no exception. It looks and feels amazing. It’s part of the smart wearable devices,  a combination between a watch and a fitness band. A smartwatch usually displays app alerts from a smartphone and controls the music players. You can also use it for typical watch stuff like setting up an alarm and for displaying time and date. A fitness band usually counts steps, it measures the activity and encourages its users to be more active and exercise more. Smasung Gear Fit is more of a smartwatch than a fitness band.

The Gear Fit features a curved AMOLED touchscreen and comes with a black bezel around the display. It also has a faux chrome edge around its entire front side that resembles the new Galaxy S5’s design. This comes as no surprise because the devices were first made public side by side.

You can customize the Samsung Gear Fit with 19 wallpapers in seven colors. If you don’t like any of these wallpapers you can choose a photo from a Samsung Galaxy smartphone and use it as a wallpaper on the smartwatch. The device comes with a plastic watchband which is kept from rotating by the ribs on the inside of the watch.

You can bring up  the home screen by pressing a button on the side of the Gear Fit and if you double press it, it brings up your choice of screens to choose from. You can set it up to bring you all the notifications you want right on its screen.

Samsung Gear Fit Smartwatch – other features

The display is narrow and small and it requires tapping and swiping to navigate between options and menus. The Samsung Gear Fit is set up by default to be read horizontally which can be problematic since you cannot bend your arm to line it up horizontally with your eyes. It’s a good thing that Samsung took notice of this inconvenience and updated it so that the smartwatch can be set up to be read in a vertical position. With the vertical setup it’s much easier to navigate and read on the device but you’re still limited to only 10 characters per line. But for a watch 10 characters are more than enough.
