Facebook and Google have both added new features to make it harder to keep away from public view. The two big Internet companies have changed their Terms of Service slightly, allowing your profile to be feature in their ads and searches.
On Facebook Search, when a user types in your name or certain features that match, your profile may come up on the search, even if this has been previously blocked by the user. This is a small minority problem that will not effect most, but for people who hate having their private Facebook account spotted, it may be a problem.
That being said, Facebook is an open platform all about adding new people and being social. Incarcerating a profile to make it un-viewable to anyone is pointless and does not work with the system, if you are against openness on Facebook, just don’t use it.
Google’s new Terms of Service details how they will show user reviews and comments on their advertisements. This means if a friend is checking out a local restaurant and you have left a review, it may show the review to the user, exposing deeper local referencing.
We find this a little less problematic, simply because adding a review to the Internet is something you know people are going to see and read. It is a statement on your enjoyment or anger at a product or place, perhaps it may be a little awkward knowing friends have read it.
Both will be ranted on till the end of time, but both Google and Facebook are well used websites and we doubt the mass majority of people will bat an eye at this change, just like Instagram ads when they finally arrive.
