Google has just updated its Calendar app for the Android operating system. The update was made to coincide with the launch of the new Android 5.0 Lollipop that will replace the old Android KitKat. If you’re going to buy a device with the Android 5.0 OS, then the new Google Calendar app will come preloaded on your device. For example, the Nexus 9 and the Nexus 6 will have the new Google Calendar app.
Google plans to release version of its new calendar app that will run on older versions of Android. The best part of the new Google Calendar app is the fact that’s it a cross-platform app. Google is planning to release the app for iOS, which means that Apple users can download the app and use it on their iPhones.
The new Google Calendar app has some interesting and innovative features that make the app resemble a personal assistant. It even has a feature called Assist that will work on the same principle as auto-complete in Google Search does. Google has learnt that it’s hard to fill in numbers and email addresses in your calendar, so from now on, it’s going to suggest to you the numbers and email addresses. It’s a very useful feature, but it does have a potential to become a bit of a nuisance. We’ll just have to wait and see the reviews for it.
Another feature of the new Google Calendar app is Events. You know how every time you book a flight or make reservations at a hotel, you receive an email with the confirmation, date and times? Well, with the new Google Calendar app those details will be automatically uploaded into your calendar. If your flight is delayed, then your calendar will be updated with the newest information. This helps you save so much time, because you won’t have to copy/paste information all the time into your calendar.
Another feature of the new Google Calendar app is Schedule view, where you get to see maps and photos of the places that you’re going to. This feature is what makes the new Google Calendar app look modern and fun.
Google said about the images that appear in Schedule view:
These images will bring a little extra beauty to your day, and make it easy to see what’s going on at a glance—perfect for when you’re checking in from your phone or tablet.
The new Google Calendar app has Google’s Material Design, a flat interface with depths effects and grid-based principles. Google loves Material Design so much that it has fitted many of its apps with it: Google Docs, Google Play, Google Slides, Google Sheets, Google Drive, Google+ and Gmail. It adds consistency to all app across mobile devices and desktops.
