Apple’s iPad 4 Vs Sony Xperia Z Tablet – Who’s Got The Edge?

April 7, 2013 By Micheal Baptiste Leave a Comment

Sony’s Xperia Z Tablet is certainly an interesting device. Introduced at the Mobile World Conference in Barcelona last month, the Xperia Z is a high-end slate with plenty of cool specs. However, with those specs and a price point that is sure to be high, the Xperia Z is right in the crosshairs of Apple’s iPad. Sony will hope the Xperia Z tablet can prove a viable alternative to Apple’s all-conquering device, much like the Xperia Z is the company’s first ever home run smartphone.

However, the tablet market is different. Whereas Apple’s iPhone is pretty dominant as a smartphone, there is enough choice and market space for the Xperia Z smartphone to look an attractive option, which of course it is. The difference in the tablet market is that Apple’s iPad it utterly dominant. Sure, there are some minor successes like Google’s Nexus 7, but even the respectable sales of the Nexus pale into insignificance next to the iPad’s.

If Sony wants to outright defeat the iPad then the Xperia Z Tablet will likely fail. The simple fact is the Xperia 10 could be a vastly better unit, but the iPad has a market presence that most can only dream of. Sony’s best bet of success is to approach tablets as it is smartphones, and to try and build its presence by offering a viable alternative to the iPad. In other words not to beat Apple in the market share, but to steal some of the iPad’s market.

However, before the Xperia Z can even take some of Apple’s glory it WILL need to be a kick-ass slate, and on paper things look good. The Sony tablet arrives with a 10.1 inch display featuring a resolution of 1200 x 1920 resulting in a pixel density of 224 ppi, while the iPad 4 has a 9.7 inch display with a higher resolution of 1536 x 2046 and more pixels per inch (264 ppi).

The Xperia Z has 2GB of RAM compared to the iPad 4’s lower 1GB, it also boasts a higher megapixel rate on the rear cam with 8.1-MP compared to the iPad’s 5-MP. A quad-core Snapdragon Krait processor clocked at 1.5 GHz, while Apple’s A6X dual-core CPU is running at 1.4 GHz.

March 1, 2013 By Nicholas Anderton 1 Comment

You just have to wait for a couple of days for the Xperia Z and the Xperia Tablet Z. The Japanese company has officially announced the release date for both the devices. Clearly, Sony is taking advantage of the buzz created in Mobile World Congress and stated that the Xperia Tablet Z will be soon coming to the United States in the spring of 2013.

Xperia Z, the latest flagship smartphone, was available in couple of countries and UK for pre-order for some days. If you were not lucky enough to be living in any of these countries, don’t worry, as you will soon get your model as the release date is announced as March 1.

Sony Xperia Z Tablet Release Date – To Feature 8MP, Claims To Be One Of The Thinnest Tablet

February 25, 2013 By Micheal Baptiste Leave a Comment

Sony is here at the Mobile World Conference in Barcelona of course, and the company has decided to show off its Xperia Z tablet again. You may remember that the Japanese electronics giant initially revealed the Xperia Z tablet alongside its stable mate, the Xperia Z smartphone at CES back in January. Of course the Xperia Z phone has been released and is faring well with consumers and critics, so Sony has taken the opportunity to showcase the Xperia Z tablet again.

This time the great news is that the company has finally attached a release date to the Xperia Z, meaning we now know when we get our hand on this slate and see if it can live up to some of its competitors.  Just like the smartphone version, the Xperia Z is waterproof and drop-proof, but what is underneath will determine whether the tablet can compete with the like of iPad, iPad Mini, Samsung 10.1 Note, and other high-end slates.

When it was announced last month we were more than a little disappointed that Sony only officially committed to a Japan release for the Xperia Z. We suspected the company would roll-out to other regions and it is nice to see at MWC that Sony is telling us roughly when we will see the tablet land. Sony says the Xperia Z will be available sometime in the second quarter, meaning it could hit sometime during April, May, or June.

Sony has confirmed both European and United States releases, and has even offered some price points.  A Wi-Fi only model will cost $499 while a 32GB model will run for $599, and that places it as direct competition to some of the big boys, so we are wondering if the admittedly good specs are enough to entice consumers to the Xperia Z.

The Xperia Z has a 10.1-inch 1920 X 1200 full HD display, quad-core processor, a back-side illuminated rear 8-megapixel camera sensor, while at just 6.9mm it is easily one of the thinnest tabs available.
