Sony Xperia Z Ultra to Release in Q3 – Check out the Specs and Features

June 28, 2013 By David Crozier 1 Comment

Sony finally announced the Xperia Z Ultra device during the Mobile Expo Asia 2013 event held recently at Shanghai. This device had been discussed at length under the tags of Togari and Xperia ZU and the speculations have all proved to be right.

The display is all of 6.4 inch by size and based on Sony’s very own Triluminous technology. The LCD screen with a resolution of 2 million pixel is full HD capable and users would get an out of the world experience viewing the images in all their true color on the screen. Video playback would also have its own additional viewing experience given the X-Reality Engine that is loaded on the gadget.

Writing on the screen of the Xperia Z Ultra for taking notes would be possible by using any form of stylus, or even a graphite pencil or a metal pen. Sony did not clarify if they would be supplying a stylus along with the device.

As for its specs, the Xperia ZU Ultra would have a Snapdragon 800 processor which happens to be the latest from Qualcomm. The quad core chip is rated at 2.2 GHz and would be complimented by an Adreno 330 GPU for the graphics part. The CPU during bench tests had returned very high figures and therefore the device is expected to excel in performance. Other than these the device would have 16 GB of internal storage capacity with a microSD card expansion slot option and a RAM of 2GB.

For battery backup, the Xperia Z Ultra would come with a 3,000mAh battery pack. Sony has had to limit the battery pack to ensure thickness of the device is just 6.5 millimeter. This makes the device to be the second slimmest after the Ascend P6 made by Huawei, the difference being just 0.34 millimeter between the two. So far as the battery capacity goes, the Galaxy Note 2 has a 3,100 mAh and the HTC Butterfly has a 3,200 mAh battery pack. Higher battery pack capacity would also mean a heavier device, which in case of the Xperia Z Ultra is 212 grams. For comparison, the Nexus 7 inch weighs 340 grams.

The device features two cameras with the rear one being of 8 MP and having Exmor RS Sensor which makes it prefect for HDR video recordings. The front mounted webcam is of 2 MP resolution which makes it enough for for video chatting.

The Xperia Z Ultra follows its earlier siblings with a glass back, frames of metal as also silver elements being popped in on some of the buttons like the power on button. The device is rated IP 55 and IP 58 so far as protection from water and dust ingress goes. Users can select from white, black and purple color.

So far as OS goes, the device would have Android 4.2 along with apps from Sony for customizing the UI.  The gadget has been slated for a launch in the third quarter of this year, but no price details have been given till now.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra set to challenge Samsung Galaxy Note 3 – Check out the Specs and Features

June 15, 2013 By Micheal Baptiste 1 Comment

Samsung’s supremacy in the phablet market is in for a challenge from Sony, which is preparing to launch the Xperia Z Ultra phablet in July. Rumors to this end sparked off after the device appeared on a French press invitation to Sony’s July 4th smartphone-launch event in Paris. Xperia blog, one of the recipients to the event, likens the oversized device to the Xperia Z Ultra.

The rumored Xperia Z Ultra is coming with a pencil resembling the Stylus of Samsung Galaxy Note series. The phablet-like size and Stylus accompaniment have led tech enthusiasts to presume that it will rival Samsung’s Galaxy Note 2 or the much-awaited Note 3.

Leaked specs from Chinese website ePrice say that the device will have a 6.44-inch IPS LCD screen having a full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and a pixel density of 342ppi. The device will likely feature Sony’s X-Reality engine, succeeding its Mobile Bravia Engine 2, and OptiContrast technology. It will boast a 3,000mAh battery, 16GB built-in memory, and NFC, Wi-Fi and MHL connectivity features.  Powered by a whopping 2.2GHz Snapdragon chip and 2GB RAM, the device is likely to have far-fetched capabilities.

The rear camera will have an Exmor RS 8MP sensor with HDR, while the front camera will have a 1.3MP Exmor R. By comparison, the Galaxy Note 3’s rumored 13MP rear camera will have the edge. However, display-wise, the Xperia Z Ultra will outshine the Galaxy Note 3’s 5.99-inch screen. The leak via ePrice also shows that the Xperia Z Ultra has both IP55 and IP58 certifications, meaning that it will be water and dust resistant like Xperia Z, Sony’s current flagship smartphone.

Will the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 – expected in September – have the vigor to beat the sleek and gorgeous Xperia Z Ultra coming in July?
