Technology Meets Fashion: Surfware Clothing for Internauts

May 19, 2014 By Lori David Leave a Comment

Arcangel-Surfware Internaut: from INTER (internet) + NAUT (from Greek: sailor): someone who spends time exploring the 4 corners of the Internet; also: Webnaut.
Maybe the definition wasn’t all that necessary, as we all know what Internauts are. Even some of us fall in this category, but given the fact that a very talented tech artist thought about creating a new line of clothing dedicated to these people, the clarifications become mandatory.
Meet Cory Arcangel, a man who sees the pleasure (and the addiction) of surfing the web endlessly in terms of attitude and lifestyle. In case you are familiar to the fashion trends, you know that major brands and companies in the field often create and market clothing lines which compliment certain categories and lifestyles. You have clothes dedicated to the athletic and sporty ones, you have clothes dedicated to rock fans, so why wouldn’t we have clothes dedicated to Webnauts?
In the mind of the designer, surfware clothing is a logical step in providing Internet addicts with the necessary garments to make the web – surfing experience more comfortable and pleasurable.
Don’t think that Cory Arcangel created some hi – tech shirts provided with USB ports or ventilating fans, nor that he created some futuristic hats and gloves to compete with James Bond’s and Inspector Gadget’s accesories altogether. His surfware clothing can be better described in these terms:

The clothing is designed to facilitate the sort of comfy browsing experience Arcangel now actively avoids: it includes bedsheets, iPhone and iPad accessories that look like Arcangel’s coveted Photoshop gradient pieces, and T-shirts, baseball hats, sweatpants and sweatshirts stamped with rainbow-colored yin-yang symbols. Unlike today’s fashion sweats, Arcangel’s are purposefully simple, plush and sturdy, recalling the customized apparel that gets distributed to athletic teams at suburban public high schools.

Why would someone create surfware clothing for Internet procrastinators?

You get up, check your iPhone, you’re on your iPad. You actually could just not get out of bed. And that’s kind of an ideal day: You just binge-watch four different series and don’t leave your bedroom.

told Arcangel to the New York Times journalist who interviewed him. In other words, if you are going to spend all weekend in bed with a laptop, you should wear appropriate clothes.
In all fairness, this is an artistic project more than it is a business plan. However, according to the news, the surfware clothing line
debuted two days ago, on May 17 during an event called You Only Live Once set in New York. If you missed the opening or you can’t shop if you don’t have a computer, this week the line will also be available online, at ArcangelSurfware.biz.
