An incredibly popular video game from the early 90s called System Shock maintained and even increased its group of fans in the two decades that followed, never once not getting the recognition it deserved, despite the outdated graphics. System Shock remained symbolic in the video game market not only because it was one of the first to imagine what a futuristic world that relies on AI more than anything would be like, but also because it inspired many gaming masterpieces that followed.
Only a few of these titles include life changing games such as the Bioshock series and the skin-crawling Dead Space. For anyone playing System Shock today, it may prove to be a rather unsatisfactory experience as the ’94 graphics and the clunky interface that the game gives you will test your patience if you fall in the category of new-generation gamers. But just like an 80s Ford, it may not be a looker, but tweak it here and there, and you’ve got a beast and a piece of history to ride with.
And just like an 80s Ford, System Shock has already had a remastered edition released back in 2015 that added some higher resolution options, a few improved graphics options and some attention to the way controls work. While those may not have been ground breaking, they still made the experience a little better for anyone with no gaming experience from the early days attempting to enjoy a story-rich title from long ago.
But Night Dive Studios believes that a title of this magnitude deserves more than just a remastered version. As a result, they are planning to make a whole new reimagined version of System Shock, on the completely different Unity engine and a whole new interface that will bring the game up to par with today’s standards while still reminiscing its origins.
This is a project that will be put up on Kickstarter in the near future, asking for a helping hand from anyone who wants to see it happen and is willing to donate to make it happen. Night Dive Studios are actually planning to bring the original concept artist of System Shock onto the team in order to ensure the loyalty of the reimagined version to the ’94 game.
The studio promises to not alter the content of the original game, and keep the story the same in the most faithful way as possible, without trying to leech off the license of a much acclaimed game without steering away from what made it so.
