Japan Now Has More EV Charging Hubs than Regular Gas Stations

May 11, 2016 By David Crozier Leave a Comment

'Electric vehicles charging'

The Japanese government’s efforts to stimulate the population to purchase more electric vehicles (EVs) have apparently paid off. Picture: Smart EVs charging at an EV charging station in Berlin, Germany.

According to a report issued by Nissan, Japan now has 40,000 EV recharging locations and 35,000 gas stations. The situation is mainly due to a huge governmental stimulus designed to persuade the population into switching to electric and hybrid vehicles.

By contrast, the U.S. has only 9,000 EV charging stations and more than 114,000 gas stations. Nevertheless, many of the Japanese EV charging points belong to private users. Plus, other countries around the world are even slower than the U.S. in building the EV infrastructure.

In Japan, however, the government is directly interested in developing the infrastructure regardless of the automotive industry’s pressures. The Japanese receive subsidies to buy EVs, hybrid cars or low-emission vehicles.

Nissan’s CFO Joseph G Peter noted that EV market’s growth heavily relies on the charging infrastructure. Nissan is the developer of fully electric Leaf, which can run 107 miles on a single charge.

Additionally, a dense recharging infrastructure spares drivers of the range anxiety, or the fear of running out of power before they find another charging point. The Japanese solved the problem with more than 6,000 quick chargers. In the U.S., there are only 1,686 quick chargers.

Nevertheless, the report was criticized for including charging points that belong to private entities. These points are usually used by a single plug-in drivers and are often located in the people’s garages.

So, critics noted that single-user charging stations cannot be used by multiple users like multipurpose refilling stations, so numbers may be exaggerated for Japan.

The EV industry, on the other hand, believes that the privately owned stations could soon become important recharging hubs if a system similar to Airbnb is set in place for plug-in cars.

Enhanced mobile apps that can detect public charging stations through the GPS tech also help ease the fears of plug-in drivers who may see themselves in the middle of nowhere with a flat battery.

Separate reports show that other countries are following suit and investing in charging infrastructure. Industry experts expect 41 million EVs to be sold worldwide by 2040. In the U.S., Asia, and Europe, Tesla Motors is also working on improving the infrastructure, while BMW and other car makers pledges to build up more public charging points in the U.S.

Google partners with Audi to add Android car dashboard system

December 30, 2013 By Lori David Leave a Comment

android-car Apple has started their own iOS car dashboard system and it looks like their megaton open source rival will join in the pursuit of enhancing experiences in cars, with a report stating Google has partnered with Audi to add the first dashboard system, based on Android.

We knew it wouldn’t be long before Android stepped into the car scene, already Google is working on self-driving cars and it looks like this will be one small step into integrating the technology into a car, capable of powering it in the near future.

Android has already got backing from Audi, but this is not the first car company to pledge support to Android’s efforts in its expansion. Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk said they would be looking to add Android emulation and Google Chrome into their Tesla S model cars.

Google will use MiraCast to put Android into the in-car dashboard and we believe this will be a stock version of Android, unless Audi and partners want to do the same as OEM partners and skin their in-car dashboard to look different from competitors.

This would be a new way to offer options on the look and feel of the system, unlike iOS which is all controlled by Apple, Google is more open with Android and allows manufacturers to change the look and add additional features and functionality to the system.

We are going to see our first look at the Android in-car dashboard at CES in January, next month. This is an exciting time, but it is just the start of technology companies starting to integrate with car manufacturers and we already know Google has more plans in the stream.

The question is can Google really pull off the same dominance in cars as they have had on mobiles – surely since Apple makes deals with car manufacturers, it would be much cheaper to add Android into the dashboard and would allow manufacturers more flexibility when it comes to the user experience, tailoring it to certain cars.

Elon Musk reveals the Hyperloop, the fifth mode of travel

August 13, 2013 By Brandi McCants Leave a Comment

Elon Musk has had a very successful career already, being one of the co-founders of PayPal, the founder of Tesla Motors and SpaceX and the Chairman of Solar City, he has his work cut out for him.

Yet he has still been able to draw up the concept for a superfast travel concept in the space of a few months, with the help of some talented engineers from Tesla, SpaceX and Solar City. Musk originally came up with the concept after months of hating the route from Los Angeles to San Francisco.

With a new $100 billion high speed rail service proposed, Musk decided to formulate the Hyperloop. This would be a new lower cost, higher speed and lower energy solution to the problem. He proposed the idea yesterday at a talk and described an 800mph tube that would shoot a passenger train from Los Angeles to San Francisco in under thirty minutes.

This would work through a magnetic pull pushing the carts along at a super fast rate, because of the lack of air in the tunnel, the Hyperloop would gain enormous speeds. The whole journey would be powered by solar panels and the technology behind the Hyperloop could be developed with Tesla Motors and other motor equipment already available.

Musk highlighted some other advantages of the Hyperloop, like the fact it would be almost impossible to crash the high-speed train and the energy is a lot lower than driving in a car or even taking a plane. He did say commercial airplanes would be better over long distance, but for short travels it would be the ideal solution.

This is where the news starts to get a little dim, Musk said he would not be ready to develop the Hyperloop. He is invested in SpaceX and Tesla Motors and believes the expense of building the Hyperloop is too much. He did say he would invest in the prototype if no other company was willing to give the idea a shot.

For the Hyperloop passenger service it would cost $6 billion and take Musk about three to four years to complete. For the Hyperloop with car transport, it would cost $10 billion. Musk said it would take another 6 years for the Hyperloop to fill the gap from LA to SF after it had been fully tested.

Musk and his team are open to all suggestions on how the alpha design can be better and for the moment it remains a concept, even though Musk said he could develop it in a year if he was not so busy currently. We hope to see a strong investor hop in and try this development out, perhaps a government would be kind enough to try the Hyperloop idea out.

With Edinburgh to London perhaps being one of the most convention train service routes in the UK and always being redone, we could see the UK as an ideal place to try out the Hyperloop, if the UK government was willing to invest in the high-speed service.
