Yesterday we saw how Google took the first step to improving their employees’ lives by removing outside contractors and putting security guards on their payroll. Their move will surely influence other companies to do the same and it appears that Facebook really needs some inspiration. Facebook shuttle drivers aren’t being treated very well and a new letter sent to Mark Zuckerberg on behalf of the Facebook shuttle drivers is making the rounds on the internet.
Facebook Shuttle Drivers’ Letter
Rome Aloise is principal officer of the Teamsters Union brand in California and his letter to Mark Zuckerberg is spot on! In his letter, he reveals that Facebook shuttle drivers are treated like servants who transport Facebook’s noblemen to and from work daily and that they won’t do anymore. The drivers are seeking union representation in order for better pay and service.
His letter goes on to say:
While your employees earn extraordinary wages and are able to live and enjoy life in some of the most exclusive neighborhoods in the Bay Area, these drivers can’t afford to support a family, send their children to school, or, least of all, afford to even dream of buying a house anywhere near where they work. This is reminiscent of a time when noblemen were driven around in their coaches by their servants.
Loop Transportation is the contractor used by Facebook to hire their shuttle drivers. The company is encouraged to recognize the Facebook shuttle drivers’ union, so that they can fight for a better and fairer contract that is going to help them earn a wage which allows them to support their families.
There are around 40 Facebook shuttle drivers that transport Facebook workers from San Francisco to the Facebook campus in Menlo Park. They make around $19 an hour.
