Apple reported that it plans to offer an online television service beginning with this year`s fall. The company is well-known for its innovative technologies and best-selling gadgets, but television is a completely new, unexplored domain, which also sounds good for the company`s leaders.
It is said that the company negotiates with programmers so they will offer a number of TV channels in late 2015 through a slimmed-down bundle. With nearly 25 options, the new service offered by Apple would include channels from broadcasters like Fox, CBS and ABC. The company stated that these TV channels would be available on gadgets developed by Apple, like the Apple TV.
At the moment, NBC is not on the list of broadcasters who negotiate with Apple. The NBCUniversal, the company that the broadcasting network NBC, USA and Bravo TV Channels belong to, is subordinated to another party, the Comcast Corporation. The latter seems not to be in satisfying relations with Apple.
Last year, the two giants, Comcast and Apple, negotiated on the matter of collaborating on an ambitious project. The two companies had in mind to launch a streaming TV platform. It was an encouraging premise, since Apple excels in the user interface area, with a huge activity of success and with Comcast being one of the biggest names in broadband services. However, the project never became reality, because Apple stopped putting its trust in Comcast at some point. It seemed that the cable company had other plans in mind, working on its own model of online TV box. Still, people from inside state that it would be hard for Apple to get involved in the online TV area if they didn`t offer NBCUniversal channels as well.
Amongst the media companies that Apple has negotiated with, the most important names on the list are Walt Disney Co., 21st Century Fox and CBS. The main purpose of Apple`s new service is to bring forth the most watched and most relevant TV channels, like ESPN or CBS, not concentrating on the less known channels that are offered in the standard cable bundles.
Experts predict that the service Apple wishes to launch this autumn will cost around 30 to 40 dollars a month. The official announcement is expected to be made in June, and the service to be available starting September 2015.
