At this year`s Game Developers Conference, Valve has caused a lot of fuss with their StreamVR technology and was in the center of discussions which spoke well of their new product. The Vive headset has just been released, but the creators have announced that a consumer version will be launched and ready to be bought later this year which is atypical for freshly released products. But Valve looks like it is not a problem to them.
Actually, there is a small number of developers who already have access to the new Vive headset but what is more surprising is that Valve and its partner HTC will offer Vive developer edition kits for free in the beginning. All that the developers will have to do is apply for the product.
Doug Lombardi, the Marketing Vice President of Valve has made this statement in an interview with Ars Technica. He also affirmed that additional info will be made public soon, through a new site that will be started in the time to come. Also, developers will be able to find the sign up forms on the same website. Lombardi added that it will not matter if the developers are big players or less known names, the only criteria is the be interested in the Vive headset.
The ones who will get the OK from Valve and HTC and will receive the new technology kits won`t have to pay for it. Lombardi said that, at least initially, the Vive Headset developers edition will be free.
The kit “comes with a headset, two controllers, two base stations – everything you need to dive in and start creating new interactive VR experiences.”, according to the Vlave`s Steam Virtual Reality page.
It is not known yet the exact number of Valve and HTC virtual technology kits that will be freely offered to the developers. But it is clear that this represents a new way to approach the market and the audience. In comparison to the Oculus Rift, which sold developers` kits to basically everyone for a 350 dollars price on their website, Valve and HTC look like they intend to take things more seriously.
Both experts and technology enthusiasts are looking forward to experiencing the new VR technology by Valve and HTC. Everybody wonders how it will behave and how the games which will be developed for the Vive kit will look like.
